Activity: Muggle Potion-Making!
Points: 10 points participation, 3 points for submitting a photo, 2 points for suggesting changes to others' potions. 25 points limit.
Deadline: Tuesday, 29 September @ 9 PM CST.

Sometimes we witches and wizards find ourselves hanging out with muggles - especially when a new Potter-anything is released. And sometimes we'd like to share a little bit of our potions know-how with those muggles, but without breaking the Statute of Secrecy or anything.

As any Potions Master worth his cauldron will tell you, a number of potions ingredients exist within the muggle world and can be used to subtle effect in food and beverages. In fact, even muggles have picked up on some of them - they use ginger to treat nausea, for example, or ginseng to stimulate the mind.

Your task will be to create the perfect muggle-friendly potion!

You may either use muggle ingredients (ie, ginger in a potion to cure nausea) or "substitute" a "similar" muggle item to make the blend more palatable (ie, blueberries for eyeballs). Drinks must actually be consumable (and not make anyone violently ill 8D), and it would probably be even more beneficial to try to make them actually taste good. You must use a minimum of four ingredients, but there is no upper limit save your fridge capacity and imagination. Since you will be trying not to let your muggle friends know about magic, you may use muggle contraptions and methods (like blenders, etc). Also, the "function" of your ingredients need not be scientifically proven; this is magic, after all. (So, horrid example, but you could use Ma Huang [ephedra herb] and say it promotes weight loss, and we won't argue with you. Although please don't use something as sketch as that; we want these potions to be SAFE.)

TOTALLY OPTIONALLY, you may actually mix up your potion and include a photo of the final result for an extra 3 points. (You can also use an image you found online of what you think the finished drink would look like.)

You may also comment to each other and and SUGGEST A CHANGE to others' recipes for two points. (That is, you can suggest changing an ingredient, method of preparation, etc.) You can only suggest one change per potion, and there's a total points limit of 25 points. (So if you submitted and did a photo, you could suggest 6 changes to others' potions.) Suggested changes must have some reasoning to count for points, ie "you could add some ginseng to increase mental clarity" or "perhaps peppermint would taste better than ginger with your other ingredients. It also treats motion sickness and would add a cooling/soothing element to the drink." Your suggestion must also be UNIQUE. (I don't want to see five people suggesting the same change to the same potion, and I don't want to see you going down the list and suggesting peppermint every time someone uses ginger, either.)

Any questions, just ask!

Sample Entry
Potion Name: Mistress Mim's Hypertension Invention
Ingredients:
1 cup low-fat milk, which is full of calcium and reduces the risk of hypertension and heart disease
1 banana, which is rich in potassium and helps prevent high blood pressure
2 tbsps peanut butter, peanuts also being rich in potassium and magnesium and thus also helping to lower blood pressure
2 heaping scoops of vanilla icecream, also loaded with calcium, and for taste/texture
Preparation: Throw everything into a blender until smooth. Be careful not to overblend; potion should be on the thick side, not runny.
Result:A peanut-butter banana milkshake A thick, chilled concoction with a rich, creamy buttermilk colour and smooth taste which prevents high blood pressure in addition to tasting delicious. Serve in a tall glass with a straw.

If you base your drink on a real recipe, you need to make some personal change to it to have it count. I don't want you to c/p a recipe you found on google and explain one ingredient, okay?

- 1 Bar of cooking chocolate to lower blood pressure.
- Teaspoon of peppermint oil to help reduce upset stomach.
- 15g of chamomile leaves to reduce anxiety.

I would suggest ommitting the Red Bull, because caffeine can often make people anxious or jittery. Perhaps it may be more suitable in a smaller quantity.

Although the chocolate seems like a good idea, I'd put less in. Vodka and chocolate mixed don't exactly go down well and it kind of seperates weirdly. If you wanted to use it, I'd suggest adding the vodka near the end of steeping the berries in vodka.

[it is weird that i know this from experience.]

Potion Name: Frozen Pineapple Margaritas
Ingredients:
1. tequila
2. cointreau
3. lime juice
4. pineapple juice
5. sugar ¼ tea spoon (plus or minus depending on the quantity)
The proper ratio is absolutely crucial in the mixing. 3:2:1:2 is about right.
Preparation:
To the ingredients listed above also add ice cubes and fresh pineapple fruit. Blend it until it looks slushy. Do not overdo with the ice and fruit. The trick is to have them barely enough to float in the liquid.
Result: Moderately thick, chilled drink, guaranteed to bring the nervous system out of stupor and improves cheerfulness for the remainder of the night.

The tequila is in fact an equivalent of the lobalug venom, the harmful effect of which is neutralised by acidic substance such as lime and pineapple. When mixed properly the drink is perfectly harmless and alleviates symptoms such as sluggishness due to atmospheric pressure. However, incorrect mixture can cause mild poisoning, so the drink is better left to be made by the experts, as it must have a well measured ratio. Also, this drink is considered valuable because collection of the lobalug venom is a practice controlled by the ministry.

p.s. It is a potion based on one central ingredient, with other ingredients balancing it out and giving it a pleasant taste.

If you are unsure about this, however, I will make up a different recipe. I don't want you to be uncomfortable with my entry. ♥

I would suggest combining the lime juice and sugar by using Rose's Lime Juice, which already has a sugar syrup added to it in exactly the right combination to cancel out the lime. It is also widely available, and prevents problems from not stirring in the sugar all the way.

Potion Name: Reginald Reelys Romping Rippleys. [RRRR]

Ingredients:
1 500g bar of chocolate - energy included in the levels of sugar plus cocoa in low doses is very good for you.
200g of grapes - grapes have some good stuff in them. some studies have even showed they help inhibit cancer and other mean things.
1 cup of cinnamon - Cinnamon is actually brilliant in curing the common cold. It's a natural remedy that is very good for clearly blocked noses and helps regular breathing - relaxing!
500ml milk - milk is a great source of calcium for keeping strong

Preparation:

Melt the chocolate in the pan and slowly add 400ml of milk, once mixture is 'gloopy' add the cinnamon and let it settle in. Leave for 5minutes simmering before adding the rest of the milk and stirring to create a thick liquid. Add to a blended and add the grapes - blend til the grapes are cut into small pieces and the potion is thick

Result: A very unhealthy mixture which sounds quite appetising. Proven to icreasing performance by ensuring good health, good immune system and a lot of energy!

[if i had a blender i'd make this but probably wouldn't add so much cinnamon...]

Your instinct is right; 1 cup is way too much cinnamon.

I would reduce the cinnamon to 2 tbsp (which I believe is about 30 mL) because cinnamon works best in small doses. To counteract the effects of the other ingredients (which I suspect was the real reason you had so much cinnamon) I would add 2 tbsp of vanilla and 1 tsp of hot pepper.

Potion Name: Cherry Energy
Ingredients:

1 cup of chocolate yogurt or yogurt of your choice - Full of calcium, and contains the creamy dairy necessary to neutralise the possible heart burn caused by the coffee
1/2 a cup of brewed coffee - containing the caffeine kick of energy for your body to rejuvenate itself at top speed
3/4 cup of cherry yogurt or yogurt of your choice - again, this youghurt goes towards helping to neutralise the strong caffeine effect so that the result is strong enough to energise, but not too strong to induce a heart attack
1 cup of pitted cherries or berries of your choice (frozen) - there are a proven source of antioxidants
Add ice cubes if needed

Preparation: Put all the ingredients in your blender and blend until smooth, serves about 2 people

Result: Unfortunately I do not have a blender... but stay tuned as I may visit a friend's house for this...

1 teaspoon of grounded pepper to help increase blood circulation
2 cups of milk for calcium
1/2 cocoa butter to help with muscle cramps
1 pinch of cinnamon for flavouring
whipped cream
1 small orange to help with vitamin C

Add the other ingrediants into your cauldron. You may even use a blender, that should suffice. Throw in your cocoa butter and milk first and stir till it's thoroughly mixed. Toss in the grounded pepper, stir that three times. Add the whipped cream and then sprinkle the cinnamon onto it for that touch of flair.
Result: It'll be a perfect blend, slightly thick drink that helps with blood circulation, grow strong bones, and prevents a mild case of hiccups!

Potion Name: Aunt Alice's Afterdinner Anti Anxiety Aid

Ingredients:
1 1/2 ounces Irish Whiskey - the alcohol in the whiskey is a natural relaxing ingredient and is the most important one used.
3 ounces hot coffee - the coffee is used strictly for caffeine purposes this will give you a little bit of energy if you have other things to do after dinner, the stronger the coffee used the more energy you will have.
1 teaspoon sugar - you can add more or less of this ingredient dependent on your personal taste, the sugar can mask the taste if a stronger coffee is used.
1 teaspoon heavy cream, slightly whipped - the heavy creamed slightly whipped is purely for aesthetic reasons and can be omitted.
Sprinkle of cinnamon or cinnamon stick - this is purely personal choice, some enjoy the spicy taste of cinnamon in their drink.

Option: Replace the hot coffee with hot chocolate for a not so strong version or you are a chocoholic.

Preparation:
Pour the hote coffee into a warmed Irish coffee glass mug. Add desired amount of sugar to taste and stir until its all the way dissolved. Pour in the Irish Whiskey then top with slightly whipped cream. This should be poured gently onto the drink over the back of a spoon and left to sit - drink through the cream, do not stir it.

Result:
The results of this drink are instantaneous. The Irish Whiskey and coffee will warm you as it goes down and once the affect of the whiskey hits your bloodstream any anxiety you are feeling should lessen immediately. As said above the caffeine will give that boost of energy if needed.

Aunt Alice's Afterdinner Anti Anxiety Aid should definitely be served if you have just finished a dinner with someone such as an in-law or obnoxious person as you will certainly be less anxious and more able to enjoy the rest of your evening. However be warned that too much of this potion will turn you into the obnoxious person.

1 tbsp Baileys
250 ml milk
100g dark chocolate
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 tsp honey
40 ml single cream
Carton of whipping cream
Preparation:
Bring the milk to a boil in a saucepan. Melt 45g of the chocolate in a bowl above a pan of boiling water. Slowly add the chocolate, honey and vanilla to the milk and stir. Melt another 45g of chocolate and mix in the single cream. Leave over the pan to stay warm. Whip the whipping cream until stiff (… the cream, not your wrist). Pour the Baileys into a glass and add the first mixture. Place a dollop of the whipped cream on top and drizzle the chocolate and cream mixture over it. Grate the remaining chocolate to sprinkle on top.
Result:

Potion Name: Burning Throats

Ingredients:
1/4 to 1/2 white vinegar, depending on tolerance
1 teaspoon cayenne pepper powder
1 tablespoon honey
1/2 tablespoon mint
warm water

White vinegar is antibacterial and anti-fungal, and good for killing off whatever's giving you a sore throat.
Cayenne is reported as anti-fungal, circulation increaser, and detoxifier, in addition to being what helps chicken soup be so good for your cold.
Mint is calming and yummy.
Honey has antispectic properties. And it's yummy.

Preparation: Mix mint and cayenne pepper with the white vinegar in a cup. Leave sit for about 10 minutes. After steeping, strain mint leaves out, add the honey, and fill the cup with warm water.

Result: A warm, thin concoction that soothes the throat without the "phlegmy" feeling thicker throat-soothers can leave behind. Expect it to shorten the length of your sore throat as it's killing off the nasties. Recommended to drink with a straw, for the sake of your teeth, as it is rather acidic.

Potion Name: Solid Cheer Potion
Ingredients:
- 2 cartons of powdered jell-o of different flavors. Cherry and Strawberry are preferred as the results would be more potent but lime, orange and apple are also acceptable flavors for a slightly milder result. Avoid pineapple at all costs, it has had adverse reactions in the past, including but not limited to nausea and unpleasant dizziness.
- Half a liter of vodka. This is the core ingredient of the mix. The inhibition rendering and warming qualities are key to the concoction. Rum can be used as well but it will alter the flavor and the preparation would need to be tweaked so we suggest keeping this ingredient. However, if you chose to ignore us, for the love of Merlin, avoid mixing it with pineapple!
- 1.5 liters of water. Mostly because we've found mixing it with any other liquid will compromise the result. Water works best and helps extract the maximum potential of the other ingredients.
- 1 box of jelly beans (colored according t the color of your jell-o flavor). This last ingredient serves to increase the cheerful properties of the potion as well as lower the required amount to consume to reach te desired results. They are also really tasty.
- 2 packs of 25 small plastic shot glasses. Clear, preferably.

Preparation:

Heat 1 liter of water and mix it with 1/2 liters of vodka and 1/2 liters of cool water. Divide in two equal recipients. Mix each flavor of jell-o powder in each of the bowls. Stir until the liquid is homogeneous. Fill each of the glasses to the top with the liquid and place on a tray. Once that's done put one jelly bean in each shot glass. Use a cooling charm to cool the mix. Place it on the refrigerator and wait forever until it sets, i.e, when the liquid has turned solid.

Result:

Image

This potion will produce 50 doses of Solid Cheer Potion, to share. Cheer is best spread in groups and more people will help with the results. Anything between three doses to ten is recommended (depending on the muggle's weight and general constitution). If brewed correctly it will produce a cheerful sensation mixed with a very nice warm feeling and a small burst of energy. The effects will appear in most cases without the consumer noticing it. It's important, then, to be very vigilant about the dosage. Do not mix with any other alcoholic based potions except beer, maybe.

Muggles sensitive to the ingredients and those who overdose might experience dizziness, headaches, temporary loss of all sense of shame a property, nausea, dehydration, temporary loss of memory, permanent subjection to teasing and mocking and itching.

The only suggestion that I have for your jello shots potion would be to exchange the vodka for Everclear, but this would be a personal choice. I am generally not supposed to drink alcohol due to medicines, I'm on, and have not been drinking for years. Now, I'm still not supposed to drink, but when I do, I find the taste of all alcohol absolutely disgusting.

Everclear is a completley clear and tasteless grain alcohol with 95 percent alcohol. With this instead of the vodka, I could have as many Liquid Cheers as I want to!

Potion Name: Bedtime Brew
Ingredients:
Valerian - a calming herb
Passion flower - reduces nervousness and anxiety
Licorice root - an overall body tonic
Cinammon bark - aids digestion
Rose hips - eases joint & muscle pain
peppermint - relieves headaches
Preparation: Fill an infusion ball with the mix and let seep until desired strength is reached. (I like it strong.) You can adjust the porportions back and forth a little depending on what sypmtoms you're feeling if you like.
Result: This brew helps calm the mind and prepare the body for sleep. The minor ingredients help a variety of symptoms that can prevent sleep.

Kimberly/Ravenclaw
This insomnia brew was invented because I love hot tea, have trouble sleeping, but hate the taste of chamomile, the most common Muggle solution. Rose hips, peppermint & cinammon have proven the alternative that works for me.

Since I don't like licorice, I might substitute chamomile. It's not an overall body tonic, but it works in accord with the mixture, at least, and not against it. Another possibility is ginger, as ginger alleviates swelling, and pain due to inflammation (especially for me in my left ankle and lower back) are often what keep me awake at night.

Potion Name: Fluff Fanfiction Remedy
Ingredients:
1. Handful cranberries. The effect is twofold. Firstly, the bitter taste removes any remaining sweet, fluffy, warm feelings which may linger in the reader. Secondly, as a superfood, they bolster your immune system against illness while it recovers from the shock of tooth-achingly sweet stories.
2. 3 drops Myrrh. Again, twofold. It is associated with death, so restores the readers angst levels to healthy. And also, upon googling , it appears that it counteracts toothache (a natural side effect of fluff).
3. Double measure of vodka (may be increased as necessary!) to help you forget that the world can sometimes be a happy place. And also to reduce the viscosity of the final potion.
4. 50ml natural yoghurt. This will prevent the potion from being too bitter for consumption, without adding too much sweetness. It also adds the volume to the potion, diluting the potency, so the effects are longer lasting and more gradual than the pure juices would be.
Preparation: Boil the cranberries until soft and mushy, then stir in the myrrh. Stir counterclockwise for three minutes, then strain the mixture and allow the liquid to cool in the fridge. Mix with the vodka and stir into the natural yoghurt. Chill before consuming.
Result: A pale red potion with the consistency of a very thin yoghurt, to restore the angst balance to your system after an overdose of fluff.

N.B. I’m not recommending anyone actually doing this, because I’m no doctor and although myyrh is fine in small quantities, I’m not sure what counts as ‘small’

Rachael//Hufflepuff
From: [identity profile] rhye.livejournal.com
My concern with this drink is that the alcohol will cause the yogurt to curdle. I would probably leave the yogurt out, because I really don't like curdled drinks, so I would probably substitute an ice and fruit blend, more like a smoothie.

Jess//Gryffindor
From: [identity profile] willfully.livejournal.com
I think that consuming this in two parts would be a good idea, with the drink first and the yogurt second. The yogurt would essentially be used similar to the way it is in Indian cooking, to restore the palette to neutral after being cleansed of the overdose of sweet (because too much death and bitterness can be a bad thing, too, and may create a vicious cycle between fluff and angst).

Ingredients:
2 ounces fresh Chamomile: Stimulates the gastric juices, making it excellent for the liver and digestive system. It calms nausea, and relieves gas especially in cases of nervous excitability.
2 ounces loose Ginger tea: Ginger has been used for many years to manage nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. The ancient Chinese used it to increase the flow of saliva and digestive juices for improved digestion.
10 leaves Peppermint: Peppermint aids digestion by helping to prevent cramping of the smooth muscles lining the intestine.
Honey, to taste: to sweeten the drink.
1 tablespoon dissolvable fiber:Fiber slows digestion and absorption so that glucose (sugar) in food enters the bloodstream more slowly, which keeps blood sugar on a more even level.
20 ounces organic yogurt, vanilla or flavor of choice: Eases heartburn
Water
ice
Preparation: Crush Peppermint leaves, and Chamomile with mortar and pestle.

Steep crushed peppermint, chamomile and ginger tea in two cups of boiling water for a minimum of seven minutes. Discard herbs and let water cool. To speed up process, put in freezer. Dump fiber, herbed water, and yogurt in blender and whip. Add honey to taste.

Some people may be allergic to honey, and it also contains calories that many muggles find objectionable. Perhaps a muggle artififical sweetner could replace the honey, such as Splenda. It would add sweetness without these deterrents.

Juice from 1/2 medium lemon: to provide Vitamin C, which is a useful antioxidant and is known to help with stress symptoms.
Fresh oregano and basil to taste: oregano provides an anti-microbial effect for any food-borne pathogens, and also provides extra antioxidants; basil is known to have antioxidant, anti-cancer, anti-viral, and anti-microbial properties, and is often used to naturally treat stress symptoms
Preparation:
Bring the water to a boil and dissolve the bouillon cubes in it, or heat the stock broth to a boil, then lower to a decent simmer. Add the chili, basil and oregano; stir for ~5-10 minutes to let the flavor sink in. Squeeze the lemon directly over your pot or cauldron and turn off the heat. Cool to a pleasant drinking temperature before consuming.
Result: A nice, spicy broth that can be consumed by itself or used as a base for soup (but the recipe should probably be doubled or tripled to make a decent pot of soup). It is extremely healthy, and feels lovely and warm going down.

It would look similar to this, if it was made into soup:
