Activity: Muggle Potion-Making!
Points: 10 points participation, 3 points for submitting a photo, 2 points for suggesting changes to others' potions. 25 points limit.
Deadline: Tuesday, 29 September @ 9 PM CST.
Sometimes we witches and wizards find ourselves hanging out with muggles - especially when a new Potter-anything is released. And sometimes we'd like to share a little bit of our potions know-how with those muggles, but without breaking the Statute of Secrecy or anything.
As any Potions Master worth his cauldron will tell you, a number of potions ingredients exist within the muggle world and can be used to subtle effect in food and beverages. In fact, even muggles have picked up on some of them - they use ginger to treat nausea, for example, or ginseng to stimulate the mind.
Your task will be to create the perfect muggle-friendly potion!
You may either use muggle ingredients (ie, ginger in a potion to cure nausea) or "substitute" a "similar" muggle item to make the blend more palatable (ie, blueberries for eyeballs). Drinks must actually be consumable (and not make anyone violently ill 8D), and it would probably be even more beneficial to try to make them actually taste good. You must use a minimum of four ingredients, but there is no upper limit save your fridge capacity and imagination. Since you will be trying not to let your muggle friends know about magic, you may use muggle contraptions and methods (like blenders, etc). Also, the "function" of your ingredients need not be scientifically proven; this is magic, after all. (So, horrid example, but you could use Ma Huang [ephedra herb] and say it promotes weight loss, and we won't argue with you. Although please don't use something as sketch as that; we want these potions to be SAFE.)
TOTALLY OPTIONALLY, you may actually mix up your potion and include a photo of the final result for an extra 3 points. (You can also use an image you found online of what you think the finished drink would look like.)
You may also comment to each other and and SUGGEST A CHANGE to others' recipes for two points. (That is, you can suggest changing an ingredient, method of preparation, etc.) You can only suggest one change per potion, and there's a total points limit of 25 points. (So if you submitted and did a photo, you could suggest 6 changes to others' potions.) Suggested changes must have some reasoning to count for points, ie "you could add some ginseng to increase mental clarity" or "perhaps peppermint would taste better than ginger with your other ingredients. It also treats motion sickness and would add a cooling/soothing element to the drink." Your suggestion must also be UNIQUE. (I don't want to see five people suggesting the same change to the same potion, and I don't want to see you going down the list and suggesting peppermint every time someone uses ginger, either.)
Any questions, just ask!
Sample Entry
Potion Name: Mistress Mim's Hypertension Invention
Ingredients:
1 cup low-fat milk, which is full of calcium and reduces the risk of hypertension and heart disease
1 banana, which is rich in potassium and helps prevent high blood pressure
2 tbsps peanut butter, peanuts also being rich in potassium and magnesium and thus also helping to lower blood pressure
2 heaping scoops of vanilla icecream, also loaded with calcium, and for taste/texture
Preparation: Throw everything into a blender until smooth. Be careful not to overblend; potion should be on the thick side, not runny.
Result:
If you base your drink on a real recipe, you need to make some personal change to it to have it count. I don't want you to c/p a recipe you found on google and explain one ingredient, okay?
• Don't forget to sign with your name/house (or use an icon sig) for credit.
• Make sure you've signed the roster before the activity ends.
Enjoy~~
I can teach you how to bottle fame, brew glory, even stopper death... But only if you sign up.

Date: 2009-09-22 10:55 pm (UTC)Ingredients:
1 pear, peeled, preferably a little over-ripe (soft). A tasty source of leucine, which helps prevent muscle degeneration.
1 cup apple juice, to keep the doctor away.
1 tablespoon pure pomegranate juice, pomegranates being famed for their antioxidants, which help keep your heart healthy.
1 teaspoon honey with a half tsp of cinnamon, to reduce cholesterol and prevent heart attacks.
1 teaspoon chocolate syrup. The flavinols in this will fight heart disease.
A pinch of cayenne pepper, which is just awesome for your heart and reduces your risk of stroke, heart attack and pulmonary embolism.
1 cup frozen yogurt.
Preparation:
Chop the pear up and then blend it lightly into an applesauce-like consistency. Throw the rest of the ingredients into the blender and blend until you have a smoothie consistency.
Result:
I have no idea. XD I think I will attempt this at the weekend and let you know, lulz.In terms of effect, this potion will strengthen your heart and help keep it healthy. This potion should be smooth and creamy and a delicate pink colour, like a strawberry shake. (I added a couple drops of food dye to achieve this.) It tastes like a light fruit smoothie, and the cinnamon gives it an interesting kick.
