Finally, I have gotten my act together! Well that meaning my RL has settled down and I don't have to worry about AP tests anymore. Whew! Okay now to the fun part.

Welcome to Astronomy Club! I'm Aurora ([livejournal.com profile] aurora_borialis) your club leader! In this club we will vote on a topic for each term. Mostly considering constellations, planets, nebulas, and the like. Any and all suggestions are definately welcome! You can e-mail me at Newbiegurli[at]comcast.net any time. We will, of course, be doing contests and the like. Well before all of that fun we need to get a roster going. The application is under the cut. Please leave it in a comment to this post.

Here is a sample application:

Name: Aurora
House: Hufflepuff
Reason you are joining Astronomy club: I absolutely adore the stars. I'm a sucker for nebulas. I have maybe about 12522 saved on my computer. I've always been fascinated with the subject of Astronomy. I love just looking out at the stars on a clear night. It's a great feeling.
Favorite star/constellation/planet/and/or nebula: My favorite star would have to be Betelgeuse (Alpha Orionis). It's the big, orange star in the corner in the constellation Orion during the Winter Solstice. I also love the Orion nebula. (The club banner is made with this nebula as its background)
Any subject of Astronomy you'd like to see covered?: Nebulae

And the one for you to copy and paste:

Reason you are joining Astronomy club: When I was younger I wanted to be an astronomer more than anything... Then I hit grade 11, realized how much physics would be involved, and ran the other way. ;) I still love astronomy though.
Favorite star/constellation/planet/and/or nebula: I've been camping at a local lake for anywhere from 2 weeks to 2 months every summer for as long as I can remember. Every night I would stare at Cassiopea before I even knew what it was called, so that one is by far my favorite. We go way back. ;)
Any subject of Astronomy you'd like to see covered?: I'll take whatever's put in front of me.

Reason you are joining Astronomy club: I've always loved the sky at night - I watch Patrick Moore's programme of the same name! [/geek] - and actually considered doing astrophysics at university. I'm just fascinated by the universe in general and atrsonomy is one really cool way to get into it.
Favorite star/constellation/planet/and/or nebula: I was really excited by the recent Cassini-Huygens mission to Saturn and the landing on Titan because I think that moon is fascinating. Further out, I love the Eskimo Nebula, and the Crab Nebula because of the stories it inspired when it was viewed on earth as the star went Super Nova.
Any subject of Astronomy you'd like to see covered?: I'd also like to do something on the loose objects in space, the occurances of meteors and comets, and the smaller bodies at the edge of our solar system.

Reason you are joining Astronomy club: I grew up looking at the night sky and researching astronomy, so being able to talk about it with people really excites me.
Favorite star/constellation/planet/and/or nebula: The Pleides, because they've fascinated astronomers for years, have an interesting backstory and you have to be able to really know where they are to see them, and even then you might not be able to find them.
Any subject of Astronomy you'd like to see covered?: Constellations or the search for new extrasolar planets.

Reason you are joining Astronomy club: I just took a general science class in uni and the Astronomy section was the most enticing. Consequently, as soon as Astronomy is offered in the spring, I'm taking it! It's so incredibly fascinating; I love looking at up at the sky and being able to recognize things.
Favorite star/constellation/planet/and/or nebula: My favourite planet is Neptune. Basically, it's just beautiful and remote and interesting.
Any subject of Astronomy you'd like to see covered?: I find the concept of liquid metallic hydrogen - the cores of the Jovian planets - to be amazing. I was ridiculously full of questions about it in class, and my curiosity about it is piqued! However, I realize that's a limited subject ;)

Any subject of Astronomy you'd like to see covered?: Yes! Black holes! I'm very obsessed with them. Also, since it kind of ties in with black holes, it would be cool if we covered space-time and light (waves and particles), oh and possibly some discussions about anti-matter and chances of alternate universe(s).

Reason you are joining Astronomy club: I'm obsessed with the stars. Next year I'm starting my major in Astronomy. Here's a little blurb on why I love the stars: I find it mesmerizing and alarming at the same time that the Earth is such a miniscule part of a gigantic universe. I feel that it would be a disservice to myself if I did not make my field of study the universe at large, and learn all I can about it. I would feel incomplete if I passed up the chance of making my life’s work the study of stars, and planets, and mysteries of the universe. I have a passion for the stars, and everything they signify. I am a dreamer, but also a lover of logic, and I feel that Astronomy is the perfect balance between these two extremes that I harbor in my heart.
Favorite star/constellation/planet/and/or nebula: That's a hard question. It's probably the Orion nebula. I like the colors, and everything. So pretty. But I'm also quite partial to Neptune, for reasons unknown to me.
Any subject of Astronomy you'd like to see covered?: Aurora Borealis? It's one of my favorites. Or the beginning of the universe. Black holes, dark matter, etc., etc. Everything and anything that has to do with Astronomy, we should discuss.

Reason you are joining Astronomy club: I adore astronomy -- so much so that I'm making it my career (First year astronomy grad student at Cornell). I love learning about it, and I love teaching it, and I love looking at the pretty pictures.
Favorite star/constellation/planet/and/or nebula: My favorite star is Albiero, which looks awesome through the telescope (it's a binary star). Favorite constelaltion -- probably Scorpius, since it both looks like what it's supposed to, and has lots of pretty things in it. Favorite planet is... well, I want to be unique and say 51 Pegasi b (an extrasolar planet) because I did a paper on extrasolar planet detection for a class once, but it's probably actually Mars. My favorite nebula is the Ring Nebula (M57) in Lyra, as it's the first thing I found in a telescope by starhopping.

Reason you are joining Astronomy club: I've always loved Astonomy since me and my dad used to go out and look at the stars when I was kid =)

Favorite star/constellation/planet/and/or nebula: Alpha Centauri. A double star system with planets that is only 4 or so light years away. Any life on one of the planets would probably look to Sol (the name of our sun) to find other life.

Any subject of Astronomy you'd like to see covered?: How far away planets are! Like how many years it would take to get to the different ones at light speed, etc.

Reason you are joining Astronomy club: Took Astronomy for 2 semesters at uni, LOVE it.
Favorite star/constellation/planet/and/or nebula: I'm fond of Bernard's Star because of its movement and whatnot for studying, but I am really interested in how stars are formed, grow, and become Red Giants (Betelgeuse) or White Dwarfs (Sirius), then either do the whole Nova thing and collapse and do it over again or become shells and whatnot. It's pretty cool stuff. OH! Giants like Jupiter are really cool, too, just thinking about the atmostphere and the liquid-metal-hydrogen. Imean, it's hard to even contemplate. I'm also pretty interested in Titan and ..I forget the other moon, but the moons of Saturn and Uranus and then Neptune, because those planets and the moons haven't been studied much up close (so to speak), but are fascinating environments.
Any subject of Astronomy you'd like to see covered?: Talking about constellations is always fun. I did a project for one of my classes (actually, I dropped out of one uni before finishing the class) where I took all the constellations currently visible in the early evening sky and made a booklet describing them, their position, what the major stars are, and the importance of the folklore to past tribes and things. (I'm a wannabe folklorist)
