So you finally started learning about Tarot cards. You were instructed to memorize them as homework for a test tomorrow and (obviously) you didn't bother until the last minute. You sit with a friend taking it in turns to remember them all. It isn't until you see in her notes that she had annotated the Page Of Swords with "think of the Ravenclaws" that you come up with a strategy that makes learning them all so much easier...

    Activity: Centaurs, Cosmology & Constellations
Points: Participation Only - 10 Points
Details: Centaurs use a different system when they view the heavens. But what is their mythology? With the aid of a star map, identify a couple of centaur constellations and summarise the legends surrounding them.

Yep, me again.

The results of the constellation mapping activity is done, and it was great fun reading some of your creative interpretations of the night sky! So, shall we take a look at the results?

As usual, let me know if I've overlooked something; it's been known to happen. A new activity will be up soon!

    Activity Weathering the Weather
    Points 1st/2nd/3rd/Participation: 50/40/30/10 points.
Details Predict the weather over two weeks ahead of time! Ten cities all over the world have been chosen. The better your guesses, the better your score, with placement for Top Three. A weather forecasting activity was suggested by [livejournal.com profile] mmailliw, who will win Slytherin 5 extra points if he participates.

Good grief. This was a bit of a tricky challenge, wasn't it? Nonetheless, you guys surpassed my already-high expectations and did pretty damn well if you don't mind my saying! This was a very close-run activity from all of the houses. Anyway, I'm sure you're all dying to know what the weather was like a couple of days ago, right?

Expandblah blah info blah )

So, let's just head on to the scores, OK? Did I mention this was CLOSE? Because it really, really was.

Just to give you guys an idea of how close this was, the average score was about 165. The maximum score possible in this activity was 300, and 17/22 of you scored above the midpoint of 150. So yeah. Close.

Let's have a look at the scores!

Hi all!

This is a reminder that the Divination activity closes in just under 36 Hours.

I've really enjoyed the contributions so far, but there's certainly room for some more! The activity is here.

Also, don't forget to sign the Roster. Usual caveats apply.

In other news, guess who has a niiiice long list of weather reports here?
[identity profile] anbyrobanby.livejournal.com

A reminder that the deadline for the Weathering the Weather predictions is in 24 hours.

I know people were daunted by the task I set, but that's probably more my verbose way of explaining everything than the challenge itself:

  • Fill out the textbox with your predicted forecasts for the 10 locations.
  • The weather should fit one of the boxes on that weather diagram I did.
  • Scoring is derived from that.

I do the leg work of checking and tallying scores, so don't panic: make a submission and hope to place!

One day remains!

Activity: Corrupt a Prediction!
Points: Repetitive Activity: Participation & Additional comments: 2pts. 30pts limit.
Scenario: Did you ever wonder why Professor Trelawney makes such outrageous predictions all the time? It turns out that her forecasts are usually accurate to a degree, but some unforseen twist always sneaks in to spoil the context. We're going to have some fun with that right now!

First off, a massive thank you to everyone who participated in this activity. A nice healthy turnout came from this (nearly 600 comments! Good grief, Charlie Brown). Turns out there were a devilish number of prophecies made that didn't quite come to fruition. But let's see what happened with the scores, hmm?

Also, don't forget to double-check the roster! Pretty much everyone is on it, but it's better to be safe than sorry.

Happy predicting!

Activity: Detention with Cartomancy
Points: Participation Only; 10pts.
Details: Professor Trelawney has asked you to sort through her old cartomancy predictions in detention! Interpret some basic past-present-future readings from playing cards, and work out to whom they refer.

Once again guys, you completely surpassed yourselves! I was really pleased to see epic participation from all houses! Not just that, your interpretations were nice and creative, and thoughtful to boot.

So without further ado, shall we reveal the scores?

You're surprised she didn't see the funny side of it. After all, cartomancy involves predicting the future using a deck of cards; swapping them for Exploding Snap ones was the most obvious sign that the new term would go with a bang. But you've never seen Trelawney this angry, and you've never known her give a detention before. Great job on being the first in the class to have the pleasure.

Returning after class, you see a dusty old cabinet open with countless crib sheets lying in piles. You know that sorting through these is going to take a very, very long time...

Activity: Zener Card Training
Points: 1st/2nd/3rd/Participation Only: 50/40/30/10 points.

Apologies it took so long to get these up- I've had a hella crazy couple of weeks. Anyway!

I was very proud about the amount of participation this game received! Shall we see who was the most psychic club member, hmm?

First place: [livejournal.com profile] veilingofthesun of Ravenclaw with a whopping 32% success rate!
Second place: [livejournal.com profile] eowyn_rain of Gryffindor and [livejournal.com profile] mewithe of Hufflepuff tied with an outstanding 29% rate! These were all above chance level!
Third place: [livejournal.com profile] caitriona_3, [livejournal.com profile] eggsnail and [livejournal.com profile] starianprincess, all of Gryffindor, tied with a majestic 28% success rate!

Congratulations, all of you! Curiously, a bit of trivia: the most significant deviation away from the expected norm was actually a low percentage (below 10%)! I won't name the individual just in case (unless they give permission). I was very impressed at the odds-defying score! In a way, you actually did better than the winners!

Regardless. Here's another bit of fun trivia. Gryffindor is the most psychic house! And Slytherin is the next psychic, followed very closely by Ravenclaw. Hufflepuffs are particularly good finders. I then was in full geek mode and made a box-and-whisker plot showing how the houses got on, and then ran some unrelated-samples t-tests: loins reported significantly higher scores here than badgers and eagles, but there was no significant differences between loins and snakes (nor were any significant difference among snakes, eagles and badgers). Obviously, no house performed better than chance. Bad luck.

Sorry, I'll take the geek glasses off now and give you the points breakdown:

Activity: Divination By Belomancy Part I
Details: Belomancy is divination using arrows. There are two curtains for you to choose from to throw your arrows at. You must choose only one, and use a graphic program to place the arrow anywhere on the curtain. Behind these curtains will be a multitude of images that will be used for telling a fortune. However, you must “earn” your arrow by answering five trivia questions relating to Belomancy. Then, in part two, you’ll be using the items you landed on to predict fortunes. Please post your trivia answers and your image in the same comment. I will be posting a comment where you can ask if you have any trivia questions wrong.
Points: 1 point per correct trivia question; 5 points for your image

I just wanted to say thanks to everyone who participated in my first Divination Club activity. If you enjoyed this activity, hopefully you will enjoy Belomancy Part Two. Are you dying to know what your arrow landed on? Want to know what it means? Stay Tuned! However, if you check the participation spreadsheet, perhaps it will tell you what you landed on. Shh!

Hey guys! Just wanted to issue a reminder for this activity! Most of you who participated have had your answers checked; however, I spied some responses with wrong answers who did not have their answers checked. So, if you haven't replied to the answer checking post, I suggest you do.

Also, this is part one of the activity. There will be a part two, and while you do not need to have participated in part one, it will make it easier for you to participate and earn points. Also, more participants in part one will make it much easier for part two to run smoothly.

UPDATED JUNE 8th!
[identity profile] xfortytwo.livejournal.com

Activity: 24 hour debate: Trelawney vs Firenze
Points: Participation 10pts, Additional comment: 5pts. 30pts limit.
Deadline: October 28th at 2 AM UTC (Timezones) (which is in the evening October 27th for US-ers, just to make sure no one is confused!)
Details:

I have a question on my roster where I ask people if they prefer Trelawney or Firenze and it's pretty much split down the middle, so now I'm really curious about your reasons!

Which one do you prefer: Trelawney or Firenze?
Why?

And here are some additional thoughts/questions if you run out of things to talk about regarding Trelawney and Firenze:
Are there any other character in HP verse that you think would fit the position as Divination Professor?
How do you think Divination classes would've been if Snape taught them?

Please leave a fairly substantial reasoning for your choice. I want at least a few lines of reasoning.
- Your replies to others should also have substance and not only be 'I agree!', etc. Points for further comments are at my discretion :)
- Be respectful in your replies, guys. Disagreeing is allowed, but be cool about it!

PS: Remember that the Tarot Stamping is still going on until October 29th! Click here to participate in that
