Activity: Slug Club Discussion: Criteria for Slug Club Good or Bad?
Points: Long debate: Participation 10pts, Additional comment: 2pts
Deadline: Saturday, April 11 @ 11:59 PM EST.

Details: We all know how Slughorn chooses the members of his club. Now we face an interesting dilemma: some people think this is terribly selective. Some people think this is a good thing. This is not a debate. This is a discussion on what everyone thinks about Slughorn's criteria, and if there is anything you would personally do differently while keeping the ultimate goals of giving the Slug Clubbers' decent job prospects intact.

CLUB LEADER NOTE: Since I feel it needs to be said in light of some of the bollocks going on in other posts, if you cannot discuss something without getting your feelings hurt, this is probably NOT the activity for you. That said, do not personally attack anyone else for their opinions. We all have them, we are all entitled to them. I'll be watching the post and making sure things don't get out of hand.

I think before she may have been invited out of personal interest at first. I assume that the Bag Bogey Hex is particularly tricky and Slughorn thought, "Hey, this could be interesting."

Then finding out her past Quidditch record, plus she's part of Harry Potter's surrogate family? BONUS!

Maybe the initial invitation was just curiosity then, because she'd piqued his interest with the unconventional hex. And then decided to keep her around because of the Potter/Quidditch details. I wonder: does he ever change his mind about someone? Does anyone get invited in, and then later on get pushed out again? I don't remember anything like that, but it's been a while since I read those parts, so maybe I'm forgetting something.

Yep, there was one kid at the start. *grabs book* Marcus Belby is related to Damocles, inventor of the Wolfsbane Potion, but his family doesn't get along with him; as a result, Slughorn discreetly ignores/excludes him on the train lunch.

So did we see Marcus Belby in any of the Slug Club meetings held during the regular school year? As I said in another comment, I always thought of the train lunch as a kind of test run, not the same as the regular meeting during the year. But I could be wrong.

And wasn't Ginny invited after he saw her hex? I don't think he intended to invite her before that.

Yes, that's exactly what I'm saying. (Sorry, I must not've expressed it clearly.) He saw the hex, invited her to lunch on the train, and then became more interested when he investigated her a little more. I understood the lunch on the train as kind of a test run to meet potentials, but didn't necessarily keep up the association at school. I could be completely off base, but that's the way I interpreted it when I read it.
