Details: We all know how Slughorn chooses the members of his club. Now we face an interesting dilemma: some people think this is terribly selective. Some people think this is a good thing. This is not a debate. This is a discussion on what everyone thinks about Slughorn's criteria, and if there is anything you would personally do differently while keeping the ultimate goals of giving the Slug Clubbers' decent job prospects intact.




CLUB LEADER NOTE: Since I feel it needs to be said in light of some of the bollocks going on in other posts, if you cannot discuss something without getting your feelings hurt, this is probably NOT the activity for you. That said, do not personally attack anyone else for their opinions. We all have them, we are all entitled to them. I'll be watching the post and making sure things don't get out of hand.

You bring up good points, and with something like the Potions Club I would have an issue with it too. I think the reason it doesn't bug me too much for Slug Club is because I see it as a social club with little real value. The people, like Hermione and Harry, who don't go out of their way to use those connections will get nothing out of it. But since some of them, like the pro Quidditch player (whats-her-name?), obviously do, then your argument's definitely valid. I just hadn't thought of it that way, since I would've had no desire to be in it IRL.

Gwynog Jones from the Holyhead Harpies, I believe you mean? Didn't Hermione say in the books that she seemed rather stuck up, too? =)

Yes, that's it. Thank you! And stuck up seems about right. That was kind of my overall impression of the Slug Club from the books. The people who wanted to network and gain advantage that way would probably do it anyway, while the ones who didn't believe in privelege would only go because they felt pressured to. So I don't really see it as doing much harm. And my distaste for the idea is made up for by the fact that it includes all four houses by choice, when nothing else seems to. Anything that even vaguely reflects that house unity we hear so much about, yet rarely see in canon, I'm all for.

See, that's what I always liked about the Slug Club in canon as well, because Slughorn was one of the only teachers who actually DID promote any sort of true house unity - even though it was in the form of hand picking his 'favourites' based on their talents and the like.

Agreed. And for that to come from the Slytherin head of house just makes it even more significant. (Snape's my favorite character, but I freely admit he's biased as hell.) I mainly got involved with the fandom because of how much JKR failed to demonstrate the ideals she pretended were all important, and I think the Slug Club is just about the only place we ever see any of that put into practice. For her to make that be from a character who leads the house she is most frequently guilty of demonizing, just makes me overwhelmingly happy, even if Slughorn doesn't otherwise appeal to me.
