Activity: Slug Club Discussion: Criteria for Slug Club Good or Bad?
Points: Long debate: Participation 10pts, Additional comment: 2pts
Deadline: Saturday, April 11 @ 11:59 PM EST.

Details: We all know how Slughorn chooses the members of his club. Now we face an interesting dilemma: some people think this is terribly selective. Some people think this is a good thing. This is not a debate. This is a discussion on what everyone thinks about Slughorn's criteria, and if there is anything you would personally do differently while keeping the ultimate goals of giving the Slug Clubbers' decent job prospects intact.

CLUB LEADER NOTE: Since I feel it needs to be said in light of some of the bollocks going on in other posts, if you cannot discuss something without getting your feelings hurt, this is probably NOT the activity for you. That said, do not personally attack anyone else for their opinions. We all have them, we are all entitled to them. I'll be watching the post and making sure things don't get out of hand.

How do you feel about having try-outs for certain groups? From sports to drama to the debate team, almost all of them have try-outs and make selections based on ability and performance. How does that fit in? I've always wondered about that.

At the school that I work at, the groups are mixed ability and fully inclusive. The drama club I teach is not selected, of course there are children who perform better than others and therefore more likely to be given bigger parts in school productions and so forth, but they are given the still included in the club and given opportunities.

Whereas in the Slug Club Slughorn hand picks students to further his needs and connections, not to give opportunities to the students.

Someone like Ron, who does have the amibition and drive to succeed, although he may be a mediocre student should still be given the opportunity.

I've always wondered at Slughorn's inclusion of Ginny over Ron in the Slug Club. Other than JKR's pathetic attempt to make Ginny a likeable character. Sure, Ron was lazy academically, but he was a brilliant strategist, and duh, he's Harry Potter's best friend. If I were Slughorn, I'd have invited him for that fact alone (which would have driven Ron crazy).

UGH I keep forgetting to sign!

Yeah, Ginny's bat bogey hex did seem a bit convenient and everything about Ginny is so obviously Mary Sue IMO, but I like to think he'd have been just as impressed by Fred and George's portable swamps, if he'd been there. As for being a brilliant strategist, I can really only think of his chess skills, which definitely shows strategy, but not necessarily in a way I would expect Slughorn to take note of. Are there any other instances you're thinking of that I'm just not remembering at the moment?

I SOO agree with you about Ginny.

I guess I was just thinking about Ron's chess skills, and his quidditch strategies. I'm not a huge Ron fan, so I can't really think of anything else. Slughorn could have potentially heard about Ron's chess strategy in their first year when they were after the Sorceror's Stone, but who knows. Honestly, I'm kind of surprised that Ron didn't get invited solely on the Harry Potter factor. The best way to trick convince Harry to go would be to enlist his two best friends.

If Slughorn wasn't impressed by the portable swamps, he totally should have been.

lol. At least our suckiness reposting needs matched. XP

I didn't think of Quidditch, but that works. And I definitely think Fred and George would've been invited, if they hadn't already left school. I can see Slughorn inviting Ron to get Harry if he needed to, but he'd already gotten Harry to show up, so it was kind of redundant at that point.

Ron lacks people skills, period. Aside from Harry and people through Harry, I don't think he had many close friends.

Meanwhile, Ginny's dated half the school and probably has blackmail material on all her exes. (I'd keep talking, but it'd just be character bashing.)

Slightly off topic, but I love discussing this...

Ginny's dated half the school

Isn't it sad that Ginny had so many dating experiences and Harry had one wet kiss with Cho and then stuck with Ginny the rest of his life (or at least 19 years). Ginny had been around the Quidditch Pitch a time or two, and poor Harry was just figuring out how to handle his broom. I just really want to believe that Harry explored all of his options (namely, Draco).

I'd like you to know I'm bleeding because of you. My sudden laughter at reading your broom comment startled the cat off my lap, who scratched me in her flight for safety.
