Welcome to the Music Club! My name is Brooke and I'm your new leader. This club is for anyone and everyone who likes music.

Before we begin, I'd like everyone to fill out an application. (Even if you were a member before, please fill out another one.) This will help me get to know you guys and decide which direction to take the Music Club in. Oh, and everyone who applies is automatically accepted. ^_^

And so you all can know my musical tastes and background better...

Name: Brooke
House: Gryffindor
Age: 21

Name Your favorite bands/artists (as many as you like): Regina Spektor, Placebo, Mindless Self Indulgence, Hanson, Ben Folds, Silverchair, Eric Clapton, Steely Dan, Ani Difranco, Indigo Girls, Maroon 5, The Dead Milkmen, Sublime, Crosby Stills and Nash, Jimmy Hendrix, Nirvana, Look What I Did, Submethod, Rage Against the Machine, Daddy Yankee, Rufus Wainwright, Muse, Pink Floyd, Alanis Morissette, Damien Rice, Harry Connick Jr., NIN, The Ramones, The Sex Pistols, Mars Volta, Garbage...and I'll just stop here because I could go on for a while.

What was the best concert you've ever attended? Well, I saw Eric Clapton twice in LA...that rocked. But a couple months ago I got to see Mindless Self Indulgence. The concert had a rockin mosh pit, crowd surfing, and pure chaos. It was one of the only concerts I've seen where the band's energy kept escalating, and the audience kept meeting it, becoming just as involved in the concert as the band themself.

Do you listen to the radio? Unfortunately, I work in a restaurant where the radio is constantly playing. So, yes. However, Nashville has recently gotten a new radio station called Jack FM that has made listening to the radio more tolerable. The station has a format that's more like Satellite Radio (no DJ's, very few commercials, massive eclectic playlists). I dislike Top 40 radio, mostly due to all the politics, payola, repetitiveness, and pure crap that's played.

Do you listen to alot of older music (70's, 80's, 90's), or mostly current music? I listen to all of it. I know alot about classic rock, and I think some of the best music came out of the 1970's. (Yes, I even own alot of old vinyl).

Do you want to work in the music business or in a music-related job? (singer, music journalist, manager, teacher, etc.) : I'm currently a Senior Music Business Major in college. Ideally, I'd like to be a Tour Manager for a large act, and eventually go into Artist Management. Both my parents work in the Music Business, so I kind of grew up around it.

What is the extent of your musical education? I play a bit of piano, but suck at most every other instrument. I was in showchoir for 8 years in highschool, and did all sorts of musicals and competitions. Now I've gotten out of the creative side of music and am studying the business side of the industry. In school I've studied History of Commercial Music, Music Journalism, and most any other subject you can think of.

Name Your favorite bands/artists (as many as you like): wEll I enjoy practically all types of music but I gravitate to to mainly 50's, 60's, & 70's music. I enjoy THE BEATLES, Led Zepplin, The Doors, The Mamas & The Papas, The Temptations, Jimi Hendrix, The Carpenters, PINK FLOYD, and music in that era! But as of NOW IM GETTING BACK INTERESTED in MUSICALS & 90's Music Plus Lets Say We Have Some Of The Same interests!
What was the best concert you've ever attended? Saidly I haven't that many concerts I go to local shows but I guess the best one I attended in volve d the band SOMETHING CORPORATE they just played so well and the person Iwas with made it so great (awww memories)
Do you listen to the radio? I do sometimes but mainly I just listen to the massive collection of music I DL or my CD'S (too many commercials radios have but if I do its either for my country/rap fix or the local oldies station)
Do you listen to alot of older music (70's, 80's, 90's), or mostly current music? yeah i do...my dad still thinks i'm a reincarnated hippie!

Do you want to work in the music business or in a music-related job? (singer, music journalist, manager, teacher, etc.) : nope my job I work in a NURSING HOME theres music sometimes but its rather hectic!
What is the extent of your musical education? Well I've doen alot of MUSICAL THETRE LOCALLY & STATEWIDE, I've played the drums for 3 years but I kinda gave up...I was rather good but now I'm outta practice.
Would you like the Music Club to focus more on commercial music, traditional music, or another type? (In other words, what kind of activities would you like to see?) I don't mind any competition but limit the GRAPHIC ONES...I can't do graphics argh!!!!

Hmmm... I remember filling out an app a while back, but it's not there anymore... anyway...

Name: Kristina
House: Hufflepuff
Age: 18

Name Your favorite bands/artists (as many as you like): Kelly Clarkson, Clay Aiken, Bo Bice (basically anyone off of American Idol), Kanye West, The Black-Eyed Peas, Gwen Stefani, Elton John, Elvis Presley... Just about anything you can toss at me I won't have a problem with. :)

What was the best concert you've ever attended? I'm lame... I haven't been to a concert. :(

Do you listen to the radio? I don't listen to the "traditional" radio very often (I listen to the iTunes radio sometimes), but I don't have a problem with it.

Do you listen to alot of older music (70's, 80's, 90's), or mostly current music? Yes. :) I like 80's music a lot for some reason. I can't explain it. I was born in 1987, so of course, I didn't listen to it when it was being made, but rather, years and years later. I like 90's music a lot because that's when became aware of musical media and went nuts with it. :)

Do you want to work in the music business or in a music-related job? (singer, music journalist, manager, teacher, etc.) : If my current major in college (communications) doesn't work out, then music will be my second choice. I know I wouldn't be able to be a teacher because I'm not patient enough for that. I have had band and chorus for years, but I don't think I could make a living off either one. I'd probably be a music journalist or recording engineer. :)

What is the extent of your musical education? Well, I have played the clarinet for about 8-ish years (I'm not very good), and I have sang in my high school's chorus for 2 semesters. I have had very basic music theory training in high school, and I took Music Appreciation last semester. :)
Would you like the Music Club to focus more on commercial music, traditional music, or another type? (In other words, what kind of activities would you like to see?) I personally think you should focus on both. I know a lot of composers because of Music Appreciation, and I keep up with the current music scene. It won't be tragic either way. :)

Beatles, Ben Folds Five, Ben Folds, Billy Joel, Mamas and Papas, Jack Johnson, Queen, The Eagles, They Might Be Giants, Barenaked Ladies, Vanessa Carlton, Counting Crows. Then I like a random catchy ultra-pop song, usually. Like that Ignition Remix thing a while ago. Black Eyed Peas had one I liked. Outkast is pretty nifty.
What was the best concert you've ever attended? Ben. Easy.
Do you listen to the radio? Yep, but mostly NPR or the classical station.
Do you listen to alot of older music (70's, 80's, 90's), or mostly current music? Hmmmm, I don't listen to mostly anything, it's a pretty big mix
Do you want to work in the music business or in a music-related job? (singer, music journalist, manager, teacher, etc.) : I'm a music teacher. Hee@
What is the extent of your musical education? Bachelor's Degree in All-Level Music Education.
Would you like the Music Club to focus more on commercial music, traditional music, or another type? (In other words, what kind of activities would you like to see?) OH! Anything is good! I think a mix would be excellent, we can learn. :)

Name Your favorite bands/artists (as many as you like): Josh Groban, Jet, Maroon 5, Anna Nalick, Something Corporate, Dashboard Confessional, Kelly Clarkson, Michelle Branch, marching band/DCI shows...I'm kind of all over the map. My real loves, however, are movie and musical soundtracks. And older classical music, but not much of the modern stuff...except Aaron Copland. Love Copland.
What was the best concert you've ever attended? Dashboard Confessional. But I haven't gone to many concerts.
Do you listen to the radio? Not often.
Do you listen to alot of older music (70's, 80's, 90's), or mostly current music? If by 70s you mean 1770s. ;) I listen to a lot of classical music. Seriously though, I listen to a mix of modern and 90s stuff with some 80s thrown in.

Do you want to work in the music business or in a music-related job? (singer, music journalist, manager, teacher, etc.) : Possibly a music journalist, actually, I'm hoping to cover entertainment news. I had planned at one time to major in flute performance, but...it's not very practical.
What is the extent of your musical education? Nine years of concert band (MS, HS, and college) on flute and piccolo, five years of marching band (HS), pit orchestras for high school and community theatre, and a few years of teaching private flute lessons to middle school students. Good times.
Would you like the Music Club to focus more on commercial music, traditional music, or another type? (In other words, what kind of activities would you like to see?) I suppose a mix, that would be most fair, wouldn't it?

(In no particular order) - Celine Dion, Evanescence, Linkin Park, Live, Nightwish, P.O.D., Faith Hill, Phil Collins, U. Penn. Off The Beat, Josh Groban, Hanson, Vanilla Ninja, Patrick Park, Five Iron Frenzy, Michael W. Smith, Rebecca St. James, Nirvana, Metallica, Heart, Jim Brickman, The O'Neill Brothers, Kaggra, Kenny Loggins, Keith Urban... I could keep going, but yeah.

What was the best concert you've ever attended?

Styx and REO Speedwagon! WHOO! That was so much fun.

Do you listen to the radio?

I do not. I listen to my .mp3s, or my CDs. The radio plays SO much crap nowadays.

Do you listen to alot of older music (70's, 80's, 90's), or mostly current music?

Hmm, both, but more of the older stuff.

Do you want to work in the music business or in a music-related job? (singer, music journalist, manager, teacher, etc.) :

Yes and no. I've been flip-flopping between a major in Music Performance and 3D Animation...

What is the extent of your musical education?

I play the piano, and I sing. I was in the chorus at my high school, as well as the community college chorus and the Madrigal chorus.

Would you like the Music Club to focus more on commercial music, traditional music, or another type? (In other words, what kind of activities would you like to see?)

Music Appreciation! Perhaps sharing of music that we all love, or sharing of music that we might not know but could come to love. XD

Name Your favorite bands/artists (as many as you like):
Lets see here... Evanescence, Maroon5, Panic! At The Disco, Michael Bublé, Sarah McLauchlin, D.H.T., John Mayer, Fuel, Michelle Branch, Tegan and Sara, Missy Higgins, BarlowGirl, Switchfoot, 3 Doors Down, Jason Mraz, Kelly Clarkson, Black Eyed Peas, Gavin DeGraw, Rascal Flatts, Simple Plan, Fall Out Boy, James Blunt, Butterfly Boucher, Josh Groban and... lots more but I'll spare you! xp

What was the best concert you've ever attended?

Oh man, over the summer I got to see Michael Bublé in concert and it was simply AMAZING!!! I love him so much and he is an absolute joy to watch perform. Best thing? I got to sit in the second row, almost dead center and I met him and the band afterwards. It was such a great night, and the day after my birthday so that just made it even better! XD

Do you listen to the radio?

I only really listen to the radio when I'm driving or at work because at home I'll either listen to CDs or when I'm on the computer I'll listen to my iTunes music.

Do you listen to alot of older music (70's, 80's, 90's), or mostly current music?

Not a lot, just because I don't have much in my own collection and I don't listen to the oldies radio stations. However, I LOVE music from all three decades.

Do you want to work in the music business or in a music-related job? (singer, music journalist, manager, teacher, etc.) :

Yes, I would love to do anything involving music. I'm a singer and I've recorded one CD but who knows if that is where I am going to end up.

What is the extent of your musical education?

I haven't had any private lessons or anything but I've had years of choir and know a fair amount of piano.

Would you like the Music Club to focus more on commercial music, traditional music, or another type? (In other words, what kind of activities would you like to see?)

Honestly, I don't really have preferences to anything. I love basically everything about music, so whatever you decide to do, I'm sure I'll enjoy!!

Do you listen to the radio? Yes! Mostly because my cd player has been broken for 2 years.
Do you listen to alot of older music (70's, 80's, 90's), or mostly current music? Mostly current, some from the 60's 70's and 80's.

Do you want to work in the music business or in a music-related job? (singer, music journalist, manager, teacher, etc.) : No, but I sometimes do concert photography for a web zine. My main job is at a sucky call center, where listening to music all day is the only thing that keeps me from blowing the bitch up.
What is the extent of your musical education? I was in concert band for 7 years-Clarinet, and marching band for 5-Clarinet. I'm now teaching myself guitar. I can also play a few other instruments at a beginner level and read music fairly well.
Would you like the Music Club to focus more on commercial music, traditional music, or another type? (In other words, what kind of activities would you like to see?) What was the best concert you've ever attended? Robbie Williams *drools*

Do you listen to the radio? Not as much as I used to, but I still prefer waking up to the tunes of my radio alarm clock over one that just emits some shrill and annoying sounds.

Do you listen to a lot of older music (70's, 80's, 90's), or mostly current music?
Mostly current, but there are just some classics that I have a soft spot for. Queen, for example, will always be one of my all-time favorite bands.

Do you want to work in the music business or in a music-related job? (singer, music journalist, manager, teacher, etc.):
No, I don't think so. I think it takes more than just liking the music in order to write about it / work with it. And even though I greatly enjoy singing in choirs, I don't think I sing well enough to make it my profession.

What is the extent of your musical education?
Besides the music classes at school I also learned to play three kinds of flute (recorder, alto flute and German flute), took singing lessons and sang in several choirs, the last one being the best, as it was my university's choir and we performed together with the university's orchestra. It was a blast, really XD

Would you like the Music Club to focus more on commercial music, traditional music, or another type? (In other words, what kind of activities would you like to see?)
Oh, I think a mix of all of them would be nice. I like trivia a lot, or maybe something like the Christmas Carol contest last month, that we take a well-known song and try to make it fitting into Hogwarts. Or making graphics that fit to the mood of a certain song.

What was the best concert you've ever attended? I'm not fond of concerts, I hate crowds!

Do you listen to the radio? I used to listen a lot, but now only when I'm in the car and even then, very rarely.

Do you listen to alot of older music (70's, 80's, 90's), or mostly current music? I listen to everything. I'm a huge fan of 70's and 80's music, but I do like a lot of the Indie that's being released today.

Do you want to work in the music business or in a music-related job? (singer, music journalist, manager, teacher, etc.) : It's such a hectic industry, I really don't think I'm cut out for it. I like writing, so being a music journalist would rock, but I don't think that's the career path for me.

What is the extent of your musical education? I was in the choir in primary school and did violin for 3 years but haven't been 'taught' anything musical for at least 8 years now.

Would you like the Music Club to focus more on commercial music, traditional music, or another type? (In other words, what kind of activities would you like to see?) I would love to see lyric contests (either guessing lyrics, or even writing our own), trivia contests, and definitely music sharing. Perhaps a good activity could be posting 'essays' (I don't mean 1000 word things, just 100-200 words) about a band we would love everyone to hear and posting a few songs for eveyone to listen to. As for what type of music you should focus on? Anything and everything. I suppose we should do commercial music to a lesser extent because EVERYONE has heard those songs (on the radio or TV), but I feel it should still be focused on, it's only fair.

What was the best concert you've ever attended? I went to Tori Amos'
"Lotta Pianos" Tour in 2003 and it just blew me away. She played some of my favorite songs such as "Bells for Her" and "Don't Make Me Come to Vegas" which was perfect as I was living in Vegas at the time. My sister and I were practically crying as she came on stage. I still can't believe how amazing that night was.

Do you listen to the radio? When I'm back in the States all I listen to is the '80s station. I'm not a big fan of rap or hip hop.

Do you listen to alot of older music (70's, 80's, 90's), or mostly current music? I love old music. And by old I mean before my time. Give me anything from the 50's, 60's, or 80's and you will be my best friend.

Do you want to work in the music business or in a music-related job? (singer, music journalist, manager, teacher, etc.) : I did when I was younger, but then I realized that a 5'6 girl that weighs 176 pounds would never make it in the music industry. I still love to sing though, choir or no choir.

What is the extent of your musical education? I'm a classically trained vocalist. I was in several choirs from the second grade to freshman year.

Would you like the Music Club to focus more on commercial music, traditional music, or another type? (In other words, what kind of activities would you like to see?) I would love for us to compare and contrast our musical tastes, even possibly recommend some new music for everyone.

What was the best concert you've ever attended? Wow, tough question. I'd say that it was probably an Infected Mushroom concert I went to last summer. It was SO INTENSE! It was at the Arvika music festival so naturally the show was outside, and it was raining just enough to cool us all off :D
Do you listen to the radio? No, not really. Very few radio stations cates to my needs. :P
Do you listen to alot of older music (70's, 80's, 90's), or mostly current music? Dude, I listen to older music than that. :D I love 60's music, both pop and rock. Early Rolling Stones are so kickass, with Brian Jones and his slip guitar..

Do you want to work in the music business or in a music-related job? (singer, music journalist, manager, teacher, etc.): Nope! I'm more into linguistics. :)
What is the extent of your musical education? Well, I'm mostly self-taught. I can play a bit of piano, bit of guitar, some more drums and I'm pretty good at the electric bass.
Would you like the Music Club to focus more on commercial music, traditional music, or another type? (In other words, what kind of activities would you like to see?) I'd love lyric-based activities, as someone below suggested! Bob Dylan would be fun to analyze :D

I also thought (as an activity or contest) that if you wanted to relate the Music Club back to the Harry Potter universe, we could find songs that we thought would fit well for a particular scene, or even 'theme songs' for characters.

I'm sorry, I'm anal and couldn't sit still until I posted this *grin* I'll shh now.

Cool :)
I had a music snob try to buy a stereo from me while Pink's "Don't let me get me" was on. She bitched about how "modern" music just doesn't hold a candle to classics by Mozart et al. Bleh. I tried explaining how it was incorporation of music and poetry, the base rhythm of a beat and soul scorching symbolism.

She "harumphed." She almost walked out with that stereo shoved up her...

cart.
