Welcome to the first activity for the Shutterbug Society. We're really excited to have this club up and running, and to see such a wonderful response. If you haven't applied, you can still do so here. Please note that you must apply before you can participate in our activities. You do not need to wait for a comment or approval though, once your application is posted you are welcome to join in the fun!
On to the first assignment!
Assignment #1: House Plants
Your first assignment, should you choose to accept it will be to photograph plants which embody the traits of each of the houses. For example, if you saw an ivy climbing up a tree to get closer to sunlight, you might photograph that for Slytherin house. Or, perhaps in the neighborhood park there is a very old and wise looking tree that makes you think of Ravenclaw house. To make sure that you are looking for qualities and not just colors--this assignment will be black and white!
Requirements
[x] Photos will be black and white
[x] Use of photo-editing software should be limited to desaturation (if you can only shoot in color)
[x] Please include a line or two of information stating which house you are respresenting, and why
[x] Please post LINKS not photos. (So as to not slow down loading time)
[x] Sign all entries with name and house or you will not get credit
[x] You may enter up to 4 photos--one for each house--for points. The first is worth 10, each additional is worth 5. If you submit multiple photos for a single house only one will count for points.
[x] You may post as many additional links to photos as you like, but they will not be awarded points.
Deadline: October 12th, 11:49pm EST
This is not a contest. You may share submissions after the deadline, but they will not count for points. Comments are not screened--so that we can all enjoy each other's work.
If you have any questions, please leave a comment.

Date: 2005-10-04 07:00 am (UTC)Secondly - here are my submissions...
All photos were taken in the Wellington Botanic Gardens.
Gryffindor - these plants are resiliant, tenacious and brave (they have to be to survive in the climates they grow in)
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y48/esso/shutterbug/sbgryff.jpg
Hufflepuff - I liked the contrasts of this one. There's the dark gnarled trunk and branches representing strength and loyalty, and the fluffy looking flowers representing kindness and tenderness.
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y48/esso/shutterbug/sbhufflepuff.jpg
Ravenclaw - this plant cascaded down out of it's basket and reminded me of the beard of an old, wise man :)
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y48/esso/shutterbug/sbravenclaw.jpg
Slytherin - These are cunning plants, indeed.

That's it!

Date: 2005-10-04 09:43 pm (UTC)All of these where took at and around my apartment building.
(P.S. My Black and White program...how to say this, sucks.)
Gyffindor - This plant looks brave. It stands alone, when no other will do so.

Hufflepuff - This plant just looks friendly and trustworthy. It comes back every spring very loyally.
http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b283/White_Trash_Prince/Digital/Shutterbug/Plant002.jpg
Ravenclaw - This tree has been around for 200 years I'm told. It's been through alot and looks wisened.
http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b283/White_Trash_Prince/Digital/Shutterbug/Plant006.jpg
Slytherin - Looks a little sneaky, doesn't it?

This was the toughest for me to figure out. But then I had a little lightbulb light up abovemy head. So This is a picture of a Ginko tree, becuase Ginko can help with memory and is associated with knowledge

Gryffindor
This plant reminded me of Gryffindor becuase of its ability to thrive in even the toughest situation.

Hufflepuff
This picture/tree reminds me of Hufflepuff, because it is multifaceted, and more that meets the eye. From afar the trunk of this tree might not seem like much, but when you get up close you notice all the little amazing details, and to me that's very hufflepuff :)

Slytherin
Simple enough I think, but the tendrils of this plant creeping along the ground reminded me of snakes, and hence, Slytherin.

Every picture I have taken was found in my own garden. My father is a gardener, so we have a wide array of unusual and fitting plants for each of the houses. Enjoy!

This is the picture I have selected for Hufflepuff. I chose it for many reasons. The placement of the flowers was a small, low growing patch next to gravel. It would have been difficult for them to grow there, but they did – which makes me think of the hard-working aspects of Hufflepuff. When I think of the low-lying part, I think about the fact that in the books, Hufflepuff wasn’t involved in too much, stayed out of drama, and got hardly any glory.

The picture I selected for Ravenclaw, I think, is pretty self-explanatory. It towers above all the other ones, which makes me think of high intelligence. It reminds me of an old, bony hand as well. It also seems like it’s been there a long time, and although it has seen better days, it looks very wise.
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y169/emma_girl/slytherinbw.jpg
The picture of Slytherin details ivy climbing up a tree. I thought of Slytherin being the ivy. It’s ambitious, for one – it’s taken over something a lot larger than itself, kind of making itself higher of the ground than it would have been otherwise. It also strikes me as cunning, because eventually it will strangle the tree, and the tree will be left dead with the ivy still on it.
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y169/emma_girl/gryffindorbw.jpg
The final picture is for Gryffindor. I have to say I had more trouble with this than the others, but final I think I found the perfect plant. It has prickly leaves, which seem to represent the Lions’ quick temper. However in the undergrowth are big, bold flowers. They are unusually shaped and stand out from the crowd!

Date: 2005-10-12 04:25 pm (UTC)Gryffindor - i thought the sunflowers i chose looked rather brave. they'd have to have some courage because their stalks can hold less weight the taller they grow. they just fall over. but they continue to grow ignoring the fact that they will fall over unless tied to something.
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b206/xaskanix/random/Picture_1331a.jpg
Hufflepuff - the apple tree i chose is loyal because it keeps growing apples every year no matter what it goes through. deer come and eat most of the branches and the pile of wood behind it has fallen over and hit it several times. but it keeps going.
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b206/xaskanix/random/Picture_1346a.jpg
Ravenclaw - this grape vine just seems rather wise to me. it is rather old, older than myself. and it has continued to grow even though its been moved at least 4 times since its been on our land.
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b206/xaskanix/random/Picture_1338a.jpg
Slytherin - this vine just seemed rather slytherin. its been growing for a few years now. its taken over almost all of the one piece of fence and soon we wont be able to open the gate either unless its cut back. that shows some ambition at least.

Date: 2005-10-13 06:49 am (UTC)Yeah I know this is late, but I thought I'd just share them anyways:)
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a88/ApocalypticAlex/HiH/Photography%20Club/Slytherin.jpg
Slytherin - the top branches on this tree were really slithery and sneaky, they reminded me of Tom Riddle sneaking around the teachers when he was behind the whole CoS plot.
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a88/ApocalypticAlex/HiH/Photography%20Club/Ravenclaw.jpg
Ravenclaw - this tree looked like a wise old man, with a long wispy beard and the drooping of the branches made me think of Dumbledore and his pointed hat.
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a88/ApocalypticAlex/HiH/Photography%20Club/Hufflepuff.jpg
Hufflepuff - Hee, this little plant reminded me of a cotton ball, and then I thought ooh 'Puff' and then I thought "ooh Hufflepuff!" it also reminded me of Professor Sprout, because I see her as a short, squat little woman. Hee.
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a88/ApocalypticAlex/HiH/Photography%20Club/Gryffindor.jpg
Gryffindor - the wide leaves on this plant gave me the impression that the plant was strong, and it looks like it's protecting the smaller plant beneath it.
