Activity: Fashion Trends - a discussion

Details: Every summer we have new fashion trends but do you like them? What would you change?
And do you think the Harry Potter characters would wear them?

So let's have a little debate. It's about fashion and I know that I love to talk about what models have been wearing on the runway (and well, when watching Germany's next topmodel I also laugh about the "models")
Anyways, like every summer there are some must-wears - at least that's what Fashion magazines tell us. But what do you think about these must-wears? Do you like them? Hate them? And would Hermione, Ron, Draco or Snape wear them? I googled some of the trends and posted the pictures so you have an idea what to talk about.

Fashion trends 2013 for women: (according to vogue)

2. 90's Nostalgia:

3. Sexy Sixties:

Summer Fashion trends for men: (according to GQ)

2. Grey on Grey:

3. Belted Coats

I'm a huge fan of fashion, but not in a "I must follow this trend" way. To me fashion is much more personal than what the magazines tell you is cool. Different people have different styles, and I think true fashion comes from dressing the way that makes you comfortable. After all, who are these magazines to tell you what's cool? The only reason it's "fashionable" is because they're telling you it is. A magazine could declare Ugg boots the hottest new trend and I'd still hate them. I look at fashion magazines as reporting statistics about what is selling well rather than definitively stating what everyone should be wearing. As far as the trends listed:

Get Graphic - I actually love graphics, but I'm also a believer of less is more. I think graphics and prints should be used wisely. I'm not a fan of the dress pictured (way too much going on for my taste), but if she were to wear, say, some graphic leggings or tights with it I would hate it even more. I think wearing graphic tops with solid bottoms, or vice verse, is the way to go because it allows the graphic to stand out, rather than being over-powered by too much going on. I could see this kind of style being really popular with Luna.

90's Nostalgia - I love the 90's. I do. That's when I grew up. And to an extend, I like 90's Nostalgic clothes. Unfortunately, I also feel sometimes it veers off into hipster territory. To me, wearing something nostalgic should be because you appreciate the nostalgia of it, not because you want to look "cool" or "cutting edge'.

Sexy Sixties - Love. I want that outfit. Right now. I can see why the 60's are making a huge comeback into fashion (Mad Men has been a huge influence on pop culture) and I love a lot of what the 60's styles have to offer. The only thing that I don't much like about the trend is that it tends to be more for very thin women (like Twiggy), rather than encompassing a number of different body types the way the following decades (and more recent decades) did.

Cropped Trousers - No opinion. I usually don't have much of an opinion on men's wear

Grey on Grey - Hate it. I love grey, mind you, but you need something to break the monotony of it. A splash of color does wonders.

Belted Coats - No opinion. I like belted coats for women, but I have no opinion in terms of men wearing them.

As far as people from the HP-verse wearing them, I think most of the ones who grew up in the wizarding world would prefer to stick to their robes (maybe Arthur would try to wear something like these due to his fascination with muggles). Like I said above, I could see Luna wearing the graphics and colorful type outfits (she seems pretty daring in her clothing styles). As far as muggle-borns go, I doubt someone like Hermione would really care much for most of these. She doesn't strike me as the type to follow fashion magazines.

I completely agree with you on the gray on gray trend: it's very bland. I think that even Draco or Blaise, while they would rock that look, would choose to add at least a splash of color in a pocket square or undershirt or even just a tie. If the entire outfit is just one color, it's very bland, and even the most fashionable and high-class people like to make a statement, even if it's just a bright yellow accent or a cold broach or something.

Exactly! The outfit in that picture would never turn my head or make me think this guy is important. Granted, that could also have something to do with the fact that he's wearing hobo gloves with a suit, but I digress :P

Yes, I agree so much with this... Although it's cool that when you like something, it becomes cool and nobody bugs you for wearing it anymore haha (see: my tye and dye Jim Morrison t-shirt I inherited from my mum, haha).

Grey on Grey + black + neon yellow would actually be my first choice. That looks absolutely kickass.

I could also see some Muggle-borns not wanting to wear obvious Muggle fashions---like, it marks them out too much. Assuming that they want to "fit in", they might shy clear of Muggle trends. (And so for someone like Hermione, who doesn't seem like much of a clotheshorse anyway, it might be really odd to see her following Muggle fashion.)

That being said, I bet that some of the half-bloods and pure-bloods would follow Muggle fashion. Lavendar definitely would, I think.

I actually do love grey on grey for men that is. I do love a splash of colour. But in that picture I love how its done. The lines on that jacket are wonderful. And great lines can make a great outfit no matter the colour. Not a fan of the gloves though.

Completely agree about the gloves. Men in suits don't wear hobo gloves.

*ponders* Maybe Wizard fashion would take a page out of Muggle fashion and get inspired by their styles? I mean we don't know much about fashion in the Wizarding world. Sure it's pretty static but as some of the younger folks are getting into the business they might think that a well cut suit is something that should also be available to Wizarding folks.

I think grey on grey is very difficult to do right, but can be great if executed properly. The problem with grey is that it can look cheap easily. But with the right piece, grey can look so expensive and chic. Also as far as the trend....I don't think it precludes people wearing a bold accessory. I think it would enhance it while still being ~*~on trend~*~

I agree with your assessment on the Get Graphic image. I love using patterns and graphics, but I also strive to balance them out and pair them with more muted pieces. Of course more often than not that means, for me, that my outfit is more muted than a standout, but at the same time, I really am a much more conservative dresser. XD I do think that too much going on is just as bad as too little going on, so it's probably a better idea to utilize large graphics so they are complementary to a larger ensemble, and not THE ensemble.
