Activity: Using Runes for Personal Growth
Details: Choose 1-3 runes to improve a character from Harry Potter; explain yourself.
Deadline: Saturday, October 1 at 2pm EDT, 18:00 UTC (check the time converter).
Points: 10 points participation

This activity is pretty straightforward, and requires a lot less Googling than that last quiz did! To earn points in this activity, you must first choose a character--any character is fine, as long as there is enough canon information about them that the majority of the HP audience will recognize them. You will then list 1-3 runes that you feel would help to improve something about that character (looks, personality traits, etc), and explain why you feel that rune would help them.

Also, please make sure you are posting these responses in your house thread. You'll still receive points if you just post it as a reply to this entry, but I like to keep things neat and organized, and house threads help me to do that. :) Thanks!

Don't forget to sign the new roster!
(There will be a 24-hour grace period after this activity ends, but it's best to do it now!)

When you say improve something about that character, can it be improvement upon a strength as well, as in something that would allow them to reach their fullest potential?

Character Name: Molly Weasley
Rune(s): jera, fehu

Explanation: Molly Weasley could definitely benefit from these runes! The former, jera, stands for a good year or harvest. While the Weasleys aren’t farmers I think this could still be understood metaphorically speaking. The family, and Molly most of all, needs some plain old luck. I would imagine a good year for Molly to include less worrying on her part, which could signify that every member of the family would be secure in their jobs and relationships (not to mention general safety). Molly was always such a giver more than a taker, so her life would greatly improve if she knew everyone she loves was safe and healthy. The second rune, fehu, represents wealth or cattle. The Weasleys are not by any means a rich family. Some more money would help them through hard times and I think Molly would feel less stressed in turn. I’m sure Molly would use it to help with repairs around the house, but she’d also make sure her children and grandchildren were all financially secure too. Molly would personally benefit from these two aforementioned runes, and I think in a way that comes from sharing her fortune with loved ones as well.

Character Name: Ron Weasley
Rune(s): Ansuz, Dagaz, & Isa

Explanation: Ron's biggest problems lie in his insecurity and rush to judgement. He does not take the time to reflect on things, and usually manages to take things in the wrong way. Ansuz - refers to insight, signals, & true meanings. I think it would certainly help him to interpret what he sees more accurately. It might also help him catch some of the signals he is missing. Dagaz refers to growth and balance, and boy could he use some of those through most of the series! He usually ran very hot and cold, and balance would have done him some good. Isa means a time to be still, to seek clarity. (I think most of us could use this one, and teens most of all. Too busy trying to experience everything - not sure they ever enjoy anything - isn't that where angst comes from?) Ron tended to jump without thinking about the consequences - he usually took the pessimistic view of people in their dealings with him. If he would stop on occasion and let everything filter through, he might realize when he's about to be...less than nice.

Character Name: Ron Weasley
Rune(s):
1. fehu. It is the rune for wealth. I think Ron will appreciate that. Ron is always worrying about money. If he didn't have to worry about it anymore, then he could worry about other things. lol isn't that how it goes.
2. wunjo. This rune stands for joy. Everyone wants to be happy, and I know Ron would be one of them. I think he deserves a little happiness to the poor guy.
3. jera. This rune means good year. I'm pretty sure Ron would appreciate a good year. Maybe more, but definitely at least one. Especially after the hell that they've been going through with Voldemort and all that.

Explanation: The explanations are above with the runes.
Word Count: (should be at least 100) 135 with everything.

Character Name: Narcissa Malfoy
Rune(s): raidho, berkano, othala

Explanation: Narcissa benefits most from raidho, I believe. It's to do with progress and moving forward with gusto. I feel Narcissa got caught up in the trappings of her past, and only when she received a fright on her son's safety did she realise the right move to make. Berkano concerns rebirth: a fresh beginning is something I feel Narcissa would relish and capitalise upon if gifted it. Inverted, it means family or domestic trouble, but I think that's more where she was at the end of the series, I give her the run obversely presented to heal those anxieties. And lastly, othala which refers to ancestral wealth and heritage. After all, she is a Black and a Malfoy. I can't have her being untrue to herself, right? :D

Character Name: Ginny Weasley
Rune(s): Isa and Jera
Explanation:
Ginny Weasley has a fiery hot temper and the rune Isa is ice. Associated with reflection and withdrawal, Isa could benefit Ginny by being used in its common practice of stopping a process and what better way to stop a constantly flaring hot temper than with a cooling counter temperament! Though Ginny is from a very large family, the pressure of Harry (her husband) having no immediate family is bound to weigh heavy on her and when they decide to start a family of their own Ginny could look to the runes - Jera would come in handy, helping both with the cycle of life and fertility.

Character Name: Luna Lovegood
Rune(s): Mannaz, Laguz, Dagaz

Explanation: The rune Mannaz represents humanity and the soul, and it is specifically used to establish social relationships. For Luna, this would be beneficial, because while she is quite inquisitive and smart, she lacks knowledge and ease in social situations. I think this rune would benefit her in not only making more friends, but it would help her recognize the ones she already has better. One of the uses of Laguz is to uncover hidden things. Luna would benefit from this rune because she would be able to locate, study not only new magical species in her career later in life, but it would help her find the Nargles and the Crumply-Horned Snorkack. Lastly, Dagaz, which promotes a positive outcome, which, is beneficial for everyone, but I feel like Luna functions better when she's happy :).

Character Name:Draco Malfoy
Rune(s):wunjo;jera

Explanation:Wunjo is the rune for "joy", jera is the rune for "good year" (in this explanation at least). While Draco definitely could have used these runes during any of his years at Hogwarts, I think these would be particularly useful post-war. His life was sucked of joy when Voldemort returned to power, but once Voldemort set up headquarters at Malfoy Manor, whew, forget about it. After Voldy's downfall, I think Draco deserves to have some sort of joy in his life after having spent so much time having to worry about keeping his family alive. This ties in with the rune "jera." A good year free of any "drama" could really do wonders for Draco.

Character Name: Sirius Black
Rune(s): Uruz, Hagalaz

Explanation: Uruz is a sign of new beginnings. Of course, this also means that it is a sign of an ending as well. In Sirius' case, his earthly life came to an unfortunate halt when he disappeared beyond the veil. He would benefit from Uruz because although he left the physical world, he would continue to live on in some form in the spirit world, completely free of his past. Similarly, Hagalaz would help Sirius break free and adjust to a major unexpected change (like, really major) in his life. (Namely, it ending.) Hagalaz also sometimes shows that something previously appearing negative may eventually turn around and prove to ultimately be positive. It seemed at first that Sirius' disappearance was entirely unfortunate, but maybe it could somehow turn around to help others understand the veil more completely in the future.

Character Name: Remus Lupin
Rune(s): Fehu, Wunjo

Explanation: Fehu is the rune for earned income and also the rune for luck. I think Professor Lupin could do with more earned income (Since it's hard for werewolves to find jobs). Also luck would come in handy because it'd give him luck to find a job to get earned income. Wunjo is the rune for joy. Who couldn't use a bit more joy in their lives? Lupin has had a hard life and he definitely deserves to feel joyful and have a joyful life. Perhaps these two runes put together would help Lupin find joy and luck in his life. (I know earned income doesn't really help with joy, but I'm sure he'd have more joy if he was able to do the things he'd like and be able to afford some stuff.)

Character Name: George Weasley
Rune(s): jera, fehu

Explanation: Jera would be a good rune for George Weasley, as it means "good year" or "good harvest." I think that would fit George well because he and Fred would have had a good year when they opened Weasleys Wizarding Wheezes, as well has harvesting in money because of the ridiculous popularity of their shop. Fehu would go along with that as well since it means "wealth." Not only did the twins make loads of money off of their shop, but they came into wealth when Harry Potter gave them his winnings from the TriWizard Tournament in order to help them start up the shop.

Character Name: Snape
Rune(s): Uruz, Wunjo, Ingwaz

Explanation: I've started Snape off with Uruz. I think that Snape lacks the understanding and courage behind a lot of his motives. He has the untamed potential, but needs the underlying elements as well. From there I think that Snape could have used more joy, something to comfort him as an adult. Those key things were missing for him, and he could have been such a different man with them. To complete the trifecta, I'd finish with Ingwaz to give Snape family and love, and the human warmth that he so desperately needed and never got. With all three of these runes, Snape would have been a very different character altogether.

Character Name: Neville Longbottom
Rune(s): kenaz, jera

Explanation: Kenaz is a sign of vision, knowledge and creativity, of granting the power to create your own reality. I think this is good for Neville because his self-confidence can be a little shaky. He also puts a lot of stock in what other people think and in what other people think of what he can do. But this should help him to not focus so much on other people's expectations but on his own. I also added jera, which is a sign of earlier efforts being realized and a time of peace and happiness. I think Neville also just needs some luck on his side, to see his efforts pay off and show him that he is more than he thinks he is.

Character Name: Draco Malfoy
Rune(s): Laguz, Thurisaz, Raidho

low, water, sea, a fertility source, the healing power of renewal. Life energy and organic growth. Imagination and psychic matters. Dreams, fantasies, mysteries, the unknown, the hidden, the deep, the underworld. Success in travel or acquisition, but with the possibility of loss.

Explanation: I picked three runes that are very helpful in terms of guiding change. These are for Draco in what I'm assuming is the end of the series, when he's basically at a cross roads.

Raidho is the rune for travel and a journey. I think he needs this because he's obviously reached a point of change. This may mean a physical journey -- it may be good for him to actually leave England for a bit (if the Ministry will allow it) so he can rethink his priorities and figure out where he wants to stand, what he wants to do.

Thurisaz is the rune for catharsis, and purging by fire. Draco has made many mistakes and no doubt he's going to have to atone for them and spend time basically rethinking them. This will help give him a new slate.

Laguz is the rune for water, of renewal, of healing. Once it's washed away (I know, it sounds so zen) it's gone.

Character Name: Hermione, post war.
Rune(s): Wunjo, Laguz

Explanation:
I chose Wunjo meaning joy, comfort, pleasure i think hermione could benefit from some joy in her life - taking the time to relax and seeing the worth in life. But it also means prosperity and then a little but of going "over the top" which we know that hermione can do sometimes, but it would be nice if she had something to balance that out so i choose Laguz as well, which has the healing power of renewal. I think that post-war Hermione would need (and deserve) some time to herself and this rune also mentions the unknown, and this post-war world will be going into the unknown a bit.

Character Name: George Weasley
Rune(s): Eihwaz, Dagaz

Explanation: Eihwaz is a rune for death and transformation, used for making a life transition easier. After the death of his brother Fred, George will definitely be in a huge transitional period, dealing with that loss and trying to find ways to move on. Eihwaz should help with this. Dagaz represents a positive outcome. Success, a fulfilling lifestyle, and happiness. This rune should help George as he continues with WWW and as his life progresses. Even though the war was especially hard on the Weasley family, and George in particular, the important thing is to live a good remaining life, one in which he continues to do the things he enjoys.

Character Name: Lord Voldemort
Rune(s): Gebo, Ansuz

Explanation: Gebo is representative of gifts 'both in the sense of sacrifice and of generosity.' Lord Voldemort is one of the more selfish characters of the series, and he needs all the help being generous that he can get. The rune also stands for balance, and, for one as unhinged as he, likewise this would be useful. Ansuz would help him with 'the taking of advice' and provide him with 'harmony, truth, [and] wisdom.' I think one of Voldemort's major character flaws is that he's so distrusting and so insecure regarding anyone outside of himself - the ansuz, meant to improve communication/insight, would hopefully help him come to realise that people aren't really all that bad.

Character Name: Harry Potter
Rune(s): Isa - Merkstave

Explanation: You wouldn't think of a 'reversed' rune as being helpful for Harry, but you have to keep in mind that Harry reversed his own fatge when he turned away from Slytherin House and therefore made the decision that traits that had helped him survive with the Dursleys such as subtlety, stealth, and guile, were not really meaningful to him in the wizarding world. Consequently, the Isa rune in Merkstave position, which is associated with such 'negative' traits as stealth, guile, and plots, would help Hary with his scheming: both in allowing him to make his plans successful and allowing him to stay under the radar when it was helpful for him to do so!

Character Name: Draco Malfoy
Rune(s):

Explanation: Eihwaz is the rune for Yew tree and represents strength, reliability, dependability, trustworthiness, enlightenment, and endurance. I think that Draco would benefit from this because by gaining strength and reliability he might gain more allies and one is always in need of allies. It would be especially beneficial for him to develop trustworthiness after all of the things he did at Voldemort’s bidding. Also Sowilo which is the rune for the sun which represents success, achieved goals and honor. Draco had a lot of responsibility and pressure placed on him throughout the years with his family’s involvement with Voldemort and I think he would benefit from gaining a little success on his own merits

Explanation: I am basically giving Snape the runic equivalent of an epic hug. Most of his issues spring from being treated badly by those who should have loved him and cared form him, social isolation and uttelry shit luck in love. With the power of these runes hw might jsut be able to get some warm and fuzy happiness in his life - the healing power of renewal, what is truly important to one, human warmth. Character Name: Draco Malfoy
Rune(s): Raidho and Ingwaz

Explanation: I feel that the runes Raidho and Ingwaz really fit for the person that I believe that Draco Malfoy is. First off, I believe that the Draco that is seen at the end of the Harry Potter series (not including the horrid epilogue)is a young man on the brink of self destruction and that he needs to make a decision on where to go with his life. The rune Raidho would help him in this as it represents travel, both literally and more importantly, in the sense of moving into a better direction for your life. I believe this rune will help him have the clarity to see what path is the right one and will guide him to make the right decision. Next I believe that he needs the rune Ingwaz to give him the peace at the end of his turbulent journey. This rune represents a time of rest and relief and family love. I think that this rune will give him the chance to relax and have a nice family life where he can be himself for possibly the first time in his life.
