Houself Employment
House elves are worked to the bone. Or so it would seem. A recent interview with a house elf in the Hogwarts kitchens says otherwise. An elf named Sparkle praises her "master" and has only good things to say about the work she does all day, every day.
"Dumbledore is amazing! He doesn't insult us and we have a lot to do, but we please him every time! Thankfully! We put on the feast every beginning of term, every time there's an event. It's fun to know we can take all the credit for the enjoyment of students here." Sparkle said smiling. She ran off to go get me a tea at this point. "Anything in it or just plain?" she asks me fully prepared to run off and get me anything. I told her I was fine. "Ok, then." I told her the service here was very prompt. "Ah yes, we elves pride ourselves on being very efficient. Are you pleased madam?" I nodded and she clapped for joy.
I left the kitchen after that very enlightening visit. They all ran around doing things here and there preparing for lunch at Hogwarts. While they did it though, when you looked at their faces they were all content, in fact I'd say they were very happy. They smiled and bowed politely greeting me every time they saw me. I only ran into one elf that didn't seem to like the enslavement. His name was Dobby. Apparently he had an abusive master in the past but when asked about Hogwarts he replied, "It's great, madam. Dumbledore, he pay me. I get clothes from kind students. I's a free elf madam." He smiled happily too, "Hogwarts is a good place for elves to work." I smiled and left him alone.
As you can see, the elves are very happy to be working for us. Who are we to deprive them of their happiness. Witches and Wizards alike need to stop rallying for their freedom. If they become free, they will be upset. I ran into another elf named Winky. She was too upset to talk. Dobby informed me that she was let go by her master. The freed elf seemed drunk and tearful. Clearly, they don't like to be free. I mean an occasional one or two maybe. But they are looked down upon by the other elves, and are viewed as rather eccentric. Personally, I think we need to think of the common good here. Elves need to stay in their current position. Continue to employ houselves ladies and gents, and you will be hapy to know you can do so in good concience now.
