Houself Employment

House elves are worked to the bone. Or so it would seem. A recent interview with a house elf in the Hogwarts kitchens says otherwise. An elf named Sparkle praises her "master" and has only good things to say about the work she does all day, every day.

"Dumbledore is amazing! He doesn't insult us and we have a lot to do, but we please him every time! Thankfully! We put on the feast every beginning of term, every time there's an event. It's fun to know we can take all the credit for the enjoyment of students here." Sparkle said smiling. She ran off to go get me a tea at this point. "Anything in it or just plain?" she asks me fully prepared to run off and get me anything. I told her I was fine. "Ok, then." I told her the service here was very prompt. "Ah yes, we elves pride ourselves on being very efficient. Are you pleased madam?" I nodded and she clapped for joy.

I left the kitchen after that very enlightening visit. They all ran around doing things here and there preparing for lunch at Hogwarts. While they did it though, when you looked at their faces they were all content, in fact I'd say they were very happy. They smiled and bowed politely greeting me every time they saw me. I only ran into one elf that didn't seem to like the enslavement. His name was Dobby. Apparently he had an abusive master in the past but when asked about Hogwarts he replied, "It's great, madam. Dumbledore, he pay me. I get clothes from kind students. I's a free elf madam." He smiled happily too, "Hogwarts is a good place for elves to work." I smiled and left him alone.

As you can see, the elves are very happy to be working for us. Who are we to deprive them of their happiness. Witches and Wizards alike need to stop rallying for their freedom. If they become free, they will be upset. I ran into another elf named Winky. She was too upset to talk. Dobby informed me that she was let go by her master. The freed elf seemed drunk and tearful. Clearly, they don't like to be free. I mean an occasional one or two maybe. But they are looked down upon by the other elves, and are viewed as rather eccentric. Personally, I think we need to think of the common good here. Elves need to stay in their current position. Continue to employ houselves ladies and gents, and you will be hapy to know you can do so in good concience now.

TO FREE OR NOT TO FREE? HOUSE ELVES SAY 'NO!'

Freedom of house elves, you ask, with raised eyebrows and astonished looks? Yes, says Miss Hermione Granger, a Gryffindor student at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. This young witch, hailed as top of her year group, has launched an ambitious (albeit misguided) campaign to free all house elves from their traditional servitude in the Wizarding World. Quoted as saying that their status as our trusted servants is "cruel", she is forcing her radical ideas onto the students and staff at Hogwarts, demanding the immediate release of Hogwarts' many elves.

Unlikely to gain support in the Wizarding World, Miss Granger is continuing her one-woman quest on this seemingly impossible mission. Brushing past every criticism, she appears not to notice that although she believes her quest to be just and good, ironcally the house elves she is trying to free do not seem to appreciate her efforts! Interviewed at Hogwarts, the house elves there were clean, happy, and most willing to serve. When asked for their views on freedom, the elves shrunk back and refused to make much comment, although clearly unhappy at a suggestion so far removed from their traditional loyalties. "Dippy likes to serve, Master, Dippy wants to stay at Hogwarts!" was one elf's very clear view on the subject.

And so I conclude - why does she continue to press freedom where it is not wanted? If the house elves are happy, Miss Granger, then surely it is more "cruel" to force them to leave the only life they have known and ever want to know? Leave our valued servants alone, Miss Granger - your zeal is misplaced and would be far better appreciate in other fields.
