Okay, sorry guys, busy week with school, for fun, let's have a little debate.

what do you want to bring to the SPEW community? A conversative view. I know many people my age are liberal and I tend to be one of the view conservative views.
what do you want changed for SPEW? I have no ideas for change.
any contest ideas? Nope.

Date: 2006-10-06 04:19 pm (UTC)I'm really not sure how I feel about abortions. I'm in a general debate with myself. I don't think I would have done it. I don't think I would be stupid enough to get myself pregnant, but if I did, I wouldn't have had the guts to kill a potential human being. On the other hand, I do believe in a woman's right to her body and her freedom, so I shall never scorn anyone who would.
As for capital punishment, I truly believe it wrong.
I'll present a quote from Lord of The Rings:
'Deserves it! I daresay he does. Many that live deserve death. And some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them? Then do not be too eager to deal out death in judgement. For even the very wise cannot see all ends.'
We cannot be 100% positive that the person was guilty. And we cannot fix it if we find out there was a mistake. Always leave a way to fix things.

what do you want to bring to the SPEW community? Just an open view and a love for seeing other people's opinions. I learn the most from what other people say, but but into something I'm opinionated on and oh man, watch out.
what do you want changed for SPEW? Nothing currently =)
any contest ideas? I'll get back to you. My brain's too midterm's fried.

Date: 2006-10-11 06:06 am (UTC)Capital Punishment: This one is kind of fluid for me, but I recent settled on a side. I used to think, "There's definitely some people who have commited terrible crimes and, given the chance, would do it again. The best way to make sure they don't get that chance is to kill them." Then I thought about it a bit more and came up with, "What about people who are falsely imprisoned?" That sat me on the fence for a long time. After a bit of research, I found out that the death penalty was originally created for people who commited very heinous crimes and society's jails couldn't hold them forever. Now our jails are perfectly capable of locking people away for a lifetime. Also, the cost involved: more money goes into giving someone the death penalty than would in keeping them behind bars. There's a sound financial reason against it, in addition to the historical and emotional ones, So I've finally settled against it based on one criteria: "How wide of a margin of error is 'acceptable' when deciding death sentences?" The obvious answer is "Zero". If a single innocent person is put to death, we've undermined everything we believe in. But logically, there's no way to ensure no margin of error and still have the death penalty. So we should get rid of it and start trying to figure out how to empty over-crowded prisons another way. (Like maybe actually reforming some prisoners. Novel approach, don't you think?)
