I don't think so- there's a reason this sort of thing gets wildly popular, even out of control, quickly, and lasts for a long time. Look at the Nazis in Germany -not everyone was a Nazi, but they sure had a lot of supporters, even young kids. And not all of these people were getting into it because they originally had it in for Jews, mentally handicapped people, gypsies and homosexuals: they all had some common ground, something to stand together over and believe in, and a lot of people got very, very far into what they were doing without realizing how their mindset had changed, or how conventionally terrible what they were doing was. There's a reason that deprogramming is necessary for people who have been in cult activities: It's a way of life. It's the social norm, and it's not as simple as standing up and saying "This is wrong" before another bout with long-standing tradition begins.

Though I agree that there was a point about desentization in the story and the fact that people can do these things without feeling horrible. That they're so programmed to think that this is for the good of the whole rather than just the one. I do think there is an attack on the way some traditions don't seem very reliable. But I do agree that it wouldn't have been as easy to say, "This is wrong" to get them to stop. They're so brain-washed in to thinking that if they don't do this every year they won't have enough to eat. It was about the fact that they feared for themselves so the murder wasn't the main thing on their mind.
