Lily looked up at her husband and smiled. “Mine, too,” she said, as she immediately dropped her eyes back down to the little bundle wrapped in blankets in her arms.
“I can’t believe he’s really here,” she breathed.
“He’s perfect,” James said softly. “Just like you.”
“He is perfect,” Lily said, her finger tracing gently over the baby’s delicate features. He was fast asleep, his little mouth puckered in a tiny o, his tiny hand clenched in a fist.
“I just wish …” she started.
“Don’t,” James said. “Not now. Not today. Let’s just enjoy this.”
“But James …”
“But nothing. Today is about us,” he said firmly. “This is our moment, our dream. We’ll face the future tomorrow. The war will still be there.”
“I’m just so scared,” Lily whispered. She traced her finger over her baby’s little button nose. “I don’t want him to grow up in a world like this.”
James reached out and took his wife’s hand.
“Me neither,” he said. “But we’ll deal with that tomorrow. Today is about us. You, me and Harry. It’s all that matters.”
Lily nodded. It was hard to forget that outside their little hospital room, the world was under attack, that things were changing and not in a good way. But James was right. None of that mattered right now. What would come would come, but for a perfect day, they were a perfect family. They had the dream they had always imagined for themselves.

Life, for a moment, was perfect.
