Percy threw the fag on the ground, stepping on it and watching as the last of the redness disappeared into gray. It reminded him of his hair, now dark and matted –dirt and Merlin knew what had collected over the past week; he’d almost forgotten what water felt like on his skin. He watched, hazel eyes fixed on the building opposite, knowing that the charms he’d cast around himself, almost without thought, would keep him hidden.
A man came out, large and bounding. Oliver, he thought fondly, watching him walk towards what he knew was the direction of his flat. The man was practically skipping – even with Quidditch cancelled, Oliver gave everything to his new position as Auror, and that satisfied him for now, Percy would guess. Then, Oliver stopped suddenly, gaze jerking towards where he stood.
He moved further back, even though he knew Oliver couldn’t possibly see him. Oliver frowned, then shook his head, looking around him. “If you’re here,” Oliver said loudly, “then you should come out. I have dinner.” He paused, and Percy stood still, not even realizing that he was holding his breath. The second passed, and Oliver shook his head again. “Just stay safe,” he said, then added, “asshole.” The word was the kindest thing Percy’d heard in a while.
As Oliver walked away, the bounce in his step gone, the coin in Percy’s pocket burned for a moment. Percy didn’t sigh, he was past that stage, and wondered whether this was worth it.
