Your Song:Big Red Machine by Justin Vernon and Aaron Dessner (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FaIx2kBC8_A) Event: The rise of communism Essay: Why does the song remind you of this event? This song reminds me of the rise of communism (more precisely Leninism) although that is far from what the song is supposedly written about. There is debate (as there is in nearly all of Vernon’s songs) over the lyrics, but whether the lyric is We're running their engine / Just like we ought to be for them or They’re running their engine / Just like you ought to be my idea remains the same. It makes me think about the proletariat and how they were the ones doing the work while vanguard party were really reaping the reward. It would be written from the worker perspective. It also speaks to having little faith in the word and believing that it’s a bit of a trap to be doing the same things in repetition with little reward, truth, and hope. Word Count: 149
