You are on a road trip in the United States with your family and your VW van has just broken down in the middle of the desert in Nevada or Arizona or somewhere. You don't know what's wrong, but there is smoke coming out of the front of the car. It's about 90 degrees Fahrenheit outside and there are no clouds to block the blazing sun. Who are they there with? Any people? If so, what can they do/what are their skills? You're with your dad, who can barely change a tire let alone figure out why the car is smoking, and his latest twenty-something girlfriend, who you suspect is drunk. Your older sister is sick with food poisoning and sleeping in the back of the van. Your nine-year-old brother is already bored, hungry, and has to go to the bathroom. What items are surrounding them? Describe them? In the van there is an ice chest half-full of melted ice with drinks (bottled water, soda, and beer) and sandwiches, three sleeping bags, some pillows, a cd-case full of movies, your laptop, a box of crackers, some protein bars, and everyone's suitcases full of clothes, toothbrushes etc. There's a trashy romance book that belongs to your dad's plaything and a thick novel you're in the middle of. You have your wallet, about twenty dollars, and your cell phone. Are there any constraints? You haven't seen another car for at least an hour, and you also have no cell reception. There's about half a tank of gas left, which is just about enough to get you to the next gas station once you figure out what's wrong with the car. Do they need to do anything besides escape? You must figure out how to get the van going again, or at least keep everyone mollified for the time being. You should also try to avoid getting heat stroke.
