It depends on where this island in the Atlantic Ocean is, though. There might be more than one flight out per day, or there might be only one flight per week if it's a small island. Assuming the island is England, it seems that there are daily flights and the trip to Vancouver is about 9 hours long. Therefore I would at first try to get to the airport, since it's possible that the plane would be delayed anyway by a stroke of luck, and I'd call the airline company with the phone. Even if I have to wait until the next day to get on the plane, assuming I don't live in some far-off location that's more than 3 hours from the airport, I'd be home within the 36 hours limit.
