It IS a sacrafice! Sorry for being a bit forceful but it's in the story that the reason why they do the lottery is so that they will have good crops that year. Though it never states fully that that's what it is. And the never mention who they were sacraficing too, but in essence it WAS a sacrefice so that the one could help the many. One person dies so that the rest of the village can live.
