I think it might be The Magic Faraway Tree, a book children that climbed into a *magic* tree where the animals spoke to them! There might have been more to the book, but that's all I can remember now. The first books I can remember really picking up and going after on my own were the Babysitter's Club books which I *devoured* in second grade.
