Ancient Runes: Term XXIV, Activity 1

Activity: Create-a-Rune
Points: Participation 10 points
Deadline: October 15, 2012 @ 11:59pm UTC
Details: Pick a rune for yourself! Find something that you feel represents who you are, and post an image of it, along with at least 100 words why it fits you.
Provide an image (no bigger than 400x400, please, out of deference to those with lower connections) that represents how you see yourself. Do you think you're cheerful, fun to be around, happy? Maybe a sun would be a good rune for you! Are you athletic, on the go, and like to work out? How about a Nike swoosh or a running shoe? Anything you can think of that you feel you can apply to yourself is fair game, EXCEPT people or places.
Once you've settled on an image, write 100 words, minimum, describing why what you chose is best suited to you. You can provide any reasoning you wish (no one's judging you here), but you must supply some reasoning for it. No points will be awarded for just an image submitted.
Keep track of what you've submitted, because personal runes will be used later on this term!

I know that we were allowed to choose any symbol, but I decided to go with an existing rune for mine. This is Wynn, a rune that stands for joy or bliss. I feel like this rune represents both something that is innately me and something that I aspire too. I try to remain joyful above all things, to find things in my life, however small, that make me feel happy. Even when things are hard, I want to find ways to be happy.
This translation of the Anglo-Saxon rune poem also conveys something I strive for...
"Who uses it knows no pain,
sorrow nor anxiety, and he himself has
prosperity and bliss, and also enough shelter."
As something I both feel is representative of me and as something that I strive for in my day-to-day life, this symbol is perfect for me.

There are a few reasons why I settled on this for my rune. First, it is a great symbol for my love of theatre. The comedy and drama masks have long been a recognizable symbol for theatrical events, as most plays are considered either a comedy or a drama. I’ve been involved with theatre for as long as I can remember and love being part of it, as either a performing, a crew person, or an audience member, so the masks define me in that sense. I also think they kind of represent my personality. I can be very emotional at times (dramatic, if you will) and can sometimes go from being happy to being upset very quickly. I tend to have strong emotions, so when I feel happiness or sadness, I feel them very strongly. Finally, I think this symbol connects with me having been raised in the New Orleans area. During Mardi Gras people often utilize masks like these, so I always think of New Orleans when I see them.

Initially, I wanted to use Grace (Gracious), as that's what Anna means, but I couldn't find an image I liked. So I chose Peace as my rune because my middle name, Irene, means Peace. I also picked this image of peace because it's colorful and bright. I try to live as peacefully as possible. I try to avoid fighting and arguing. My best friend has said that she loves to come to my house, as it's so peaceful. I like that; that my house can be a place of peace. My co-workers have also told me that I'm one of the most peaceful people they have ever known.

I was tempted to
stealborrow Colleen's wonderful idea of using the two Drama masks as my rune since my big love is theatre, but then I realised that the focus lies on the music theatre, and that my heart beats the most for music and music theatre, so I chose a treble clef, since it truly would be my own, personal rune. I adore music, more than I could even express. I grew up with music, am training to be a musician, and would never want to live without it; it can be incredibly emotional, just like me. Music just touches me and takes me on endless journeys and I can get lost in it for hours. So... Yes, my rune is definitely a treble clef ♥Avi//Huflepuff

The rune I chose for myself is a spiral. First of all, as a Slytherin, I know snakes like to form themselves into a spiral shape: it represents adaptability and change which is a very good fit for a Slytherin. Also, spirals have very interesting mathematical properties and are used to form counterexamples (I've even created a counterexample or two myself based on spirals - and there are other questions involving them which I would like to solve but I have no prayer about). Finally, though, we have to note that spirals can simply be beautiful, whether they come from a snake or simply a winding path!

This is my rune! Although fountain pens are pretty outdated, they still stand for writing, which is what I do for work and also what I have loved to do for years and years. The hockey stick is also a little obviously related to me since I am passionate about the sport, although I cannot personally play it myself because I can't even skate! I've made lots of good friends watching the game, going to games, plus I write about hockey too and I would love to keep doing so in the future, perhaps as a full-time job. (Hint hint, haha.) I also think it looks nice and powerful to see these two symbols of my life crossed like this.

My rune is a kitten firstly because I am probably always going to be on the verge of morphing into full-on cat lady but also because kittens are true to how I am I think like sometimes I am very sweet and fluffy (bed head) and nice and I will purr if you rub my belly but IF YOU DON'T DO IT RIGHT THE CLAWS WILL COME OUT OF NOWHERE AND I WILL SCRATCH YOU TO HELL AND ALSO PROBABLY PEE ON YOUR PILLOW oh and if I like you I will bring you the bodies of your enemies as tokens of my esteem.

I chose a rat for my rune because not only do I love rats but I also can relate to them a lot as well. In the Chinese zodiac, rats are ambitious, charismatic, success-oriented perfectionists on the good side and secretive, calculating and devious on the "bad" side and most of those traits are very Slytherin in my opinion. Two, rats have an extremely terrible rap for being dirty, evil plague-bringers when in fact they are actually very intelligent, clean and nice (the domesticated ones, at least :P). I relate this to me because I often have felt like an underdog in my life.

My rune is a funky looking heart. This is actually how I draw hearts the majority of the time because it's really fast so that's why I chose this particular design. The reason for the heart itself is pretty straightforward: I love everything about love! I love being in love and movies about love and pictures and songs and books about love. I also have a large capacity for caring about people and things. I throw my whole heart into causes that mean something to me. I think with my heart/feelings rather than with my brain/logic. I think this rune fits all aspects of my life.

For my rune, I picked a silhouette of my favorite piano-- and the person known for playing it. It's from the Peanuts comic strip and I relate to it because I am a pianist and have been playing since before I even turned Schroeder's age. :) It's my favorite thing to do when I'm completely bored or upset, and I relate to this image in particular because one of the things I started doing in high school was playing piano for musicals. "You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown" was one that I was asked to played for in college, and most of my best friends from school were made through this show so it will always hold a special place in my heart. I think playing piano is one of the most notable things people associate with me, so it's appropriate for it to be my rune.
(Unless this counts as a person and is not allowed, in which case let me know and I'll go back to the drawing board!)

I chose the ouroboros because it represents cycles, no beginnings and no endings. One of my personal philosophies is that everything in life is a cycle and that life itself is a cycle; every living thing is born, lives and dies and is reborn to live and die again in one form or another. Seasons run in cycles, summer becomes fall becomes winter becomes spring until it is summer again. All substances have a cycle as well, for example, ice becomes water which in turn becomes ice.
I also like that the ouroboros is a symbol of eternity. Which is great and incomprehensible and in a way completely unchanging. Ever changing and yet always the same. This kind of dichotomy is the very essence of life. I really like this philosophy so I think this is a good rune for me.

As with the Astronomy Club activity of a similar nature, I've gone with mountains to represent myself.
I think mountains are a wonderful representation of my personality at any given moment. When I'm happy I'm optimistic, looking up, and filled with dreams ("head in the clouds"). When I'm upset I'm someone hard to reach, I'm depressed.
But they are not only~ good at describing my personality. Mountains are also good at describing my life, past and present. I've had a lot of ups and downs, but both bad and good things have shaped who I am today. I've faced a ton of obstacles and yeah, sometimes it did feel like I was climbing an impossible mountain. But over the years I've felt better about things and kind of like I've reached the top.

I picked a triskele to symbolize me for a few reasons. The triskele is a symbol that can mean different things to different people, but to me, it signifies balance, which I am always striving for. I think three by nature is an important number -- a lot of things come in threes and I am a believer of this tenet. The triskele for me stands for who I was, who I am, and who I can be, three things I hold dear to me, and who I am as a person. I think it's important to look to the things that shaped me, that formed my experiences, just as it is important for me to enjoy the current situation, the present, and to never forget to look forward to things that can be. It reminds me that nothing is static, that nothing will ever be the same, that nothing can be captured and preserved as it was in one moment in time (even memories are fickle, they change with perspective that only time can give), and I think that the movement of the lines in the triskele capture this impermanence perfectly.

I chose a winged key for this. The key represents a sense of power as well as a keeper, sometimes a keeper of knowledge. Since I am studying to be a teacher, this describes me perfectly. While I wouldn't consider myself "powerful", a teacher exercises some power of students, especially the power to shape their learning. I chose to give my key wings because wings symbolize a desire to overcome a challenge. Getting to study teaching has been a hard journey, filled with challenges, so it fits well that I have overcome so much in order to get what I want most out of my life. Also, I really like old key and wing jewlery, so it seemed like a plus to put the two together!

I picked the image of Saturn for my rune because it’s one of the most recognizable images of our solar system, and my favourite planet as well. Space and space exploration has always been something that I have been interested in. I think it represents both my love of science and imagination. This goes hand in hand with my love of science fiction which has influenced who I am over my lifetime. In addition, I am the kind of person who always has their head in the clouds, so space can also represent “space case” in this instance as well.

I tried to come up with something really creative, but in the end I went with a smiley face because I really do think it represents me the most. It represents not just cheerfulness but optimism and friendliness as well, I think, and those are two things that are really important to me. I try to always be nice to people, to smile, to say hi. I like talking to people and being around people. It makes me feel good. Also, I'm an optimist by nature, and even in hard times, I try really hard to be positive and to always look on the bright side. Being negative and being grumpy all the time just takes so much energy, and I would rather not waste time that way. So I think that even though smileys are everywhere these days that they really do represent the person I am and the person I want to be.
