Slug Club: Discussion [TERM XIII-VI]

Activity: Slug Club Discussion: Criteria for Slug Club Good or Bad?
Points: Long debate: Participation 10pts, Additional comment: 2pts
Deadline: Saturday, April 11 @ 11:59 PM EST.

Details: We all know how Slughorn chooses the members of his club. Now we face an interesting dilemma: some people think this is terribly selective. Some people think this is a good thing. This is not a debate. This is a discussion on what everyone thinks about Slughorn's criteria, and if there is anything you would personally do differently while keeping the ultimate goals of giving the Slug Clubbers' decent job prospects intact.

CLUB LEADER NOTE: Since I feel it needs to be said in light of some of the bollocks going on in other posts, if you cannot discuss something without getting your feelings hurt, this is probably NOT the activity for you. That said, do not personally attack anyone else for their opinions. We all have them, we are all entitled to them. I'll be watching the post and making sure things don't get out of hand.

True, but the ones who wanted to join were the ones who didn't get invited. Ron was put out that he hadn't been invited, and then there was the whole Draco gate-crashing thing...although Ron was more put out because of the whole Hermione/Cormac thing, and Draco was more likely sneaking back from the Room of Requirement than trying to get into the party

Well, poo. I'm sure that somewhere in Hogwarts, some people desperately wanted to be invited to the Slug Club and weren't, therefore making my exclusive club statement relative. So there. :P

roflmao. You crack me up.

Percy. Percy Weasley would've desperately wanted to be part of the Slug Club, I do believe.

Exactly! Percy would have killed for a Slug Club invitation! And I think that if Percy had still been at Hogwarts, he would have been invited. He was Head Boy after all, in case you didn't know. ;)

With his Ministry aspirations (at the time), he definitely would've been prime SC material.

So I guess we're back to needing someone who would want in and wouldn't be invited. *sigh* And here I thought I was helping you out. ;D

Well, seeing as how the Percy theory can never be tested, it stands. :)

But there was Luna, who wasn't invited but was thrilled when Harry asked her to the party. Of course, that could be because Harry asked her, but I'm going with the Slug Club angle.

I see Luna as being thrilled with whatever's in front of her, but not really wanting anything beforehand. Just part of her offbeat oddity. I can't really see her pining to be a part of anything. She's comfortable with herself, and shows no insecurity to be accepted by anyone, really.

And I must say, I'm amazed we can still remember how this tangent started and relate it back to the issue at this point.

Luna is my homegirl. I was so disappointed when she and Harry didn't end up together. She's the only female I can see Harry being with. I can't really see her pining to be a part of some organized club, but I could see her pining for her friendships with Harry and the gang. The ceiling in her bedroom in DH says how much those friendships mean to her because she hadn't ever had them before.

That scene is so sad! It breaks my heart, because they're obviously so much more important to her than they are to them. :'[

So in that way, I can see her wanting to come to SC, just because it's someplace they go that she can't come along. *points to paragraph - Look, on topic!*

I agree with you on Luna/Harry being the best het pairing for Harry. Similarly, the only way I could ever see Ginny in a positive light would've been with Neville. Because she saw him long before everyone else did, when he was just a doofus to everyone else. I still don't like her, but that would've made me accept her as a legitimate character at least.

Luna was the only girl who saw Harry for himself, and accepted him completely. Luna was the one that Harry talked to and confided in, even when he wouldn't speak to anyone else. She was clearly the most perfect girl for him.

I like Ginny and Neville together too. I just really think that the last year at Hogwarts, trying to keep spirits up and survive with the Carrows would have bonded Ginny and Neville in a way that JKR didn't show. You don't go through those experiences together and not become close.

That being said, I don't think Neville would care anything about joining the Slug Club. Back to topic! :)
