Slug Club: Discussion [TERM XIII-VI]

Activity: Slug Club Discussion: Criteria for Slug Club Good or Bad?
Points: Long debate: Participation 10pts, Additional comment: 2pts
Deadline: Saturday, April 11 @ 11:59 PM EST.

Details: We all know how Slughorn chooses the members of his club. Now we face an interesting dilemma: some people think this is terribly selective. Some people think this is a good thing. This is not a debate. This is a discussion on what everyone thinks about Slughorn's criteria, and if there is anything you would personally do differently while keeping the ultimate goals of giving the Slug Clubbers' decent job prospects intact.

CLUB LEADER NOTE: Since I feel it needs to be said in light of some of the bollocks going on in other posts, if you cannot discuss something without getting your feelings hurt, this is probably NOT the activity for you. That said, do not personally attack anyone else for their opinions. We all have them, we are all entitled to them. I'll be watching the post and making sure things don't get out of hand.

Above all else, Slughorn valued people who he felt would be successful in the future, because he wanted to be able to influence them (or at least make people think he could influence them). I don't think that Slughorn particularly cared for any of the students in his club, beyond how they could benefit him. That's why he asked the children of influential members of Wizarding society, and the occasional extremely skilled non-connected person.

For this reason, he had to make the Slug Club look exclusive, because who would want to join an "exclusive" club that allows just anyone in? If you think about it, it's a lot like the popular crowd in high school. The exclusivity is what makes people popular. Without it, no one cares. While I may not necessarily agree with it, I can understand why Slughorn felt the need to be so selective. It also gives a man with a Napoleon complex the opportunity to exert control over helpless students, but I digress.

I don't really remember anyone really wanting to be in the Slug Club. (There might've been a comment on the train, but I can't recall.) For the most part, it seemed like something they were invited to, and then felt obligated to attend. Which makes its "exclusive" appeal irrelevant. There probably are some kids who would've wanted to join, but through the majority of the kids we hear about, it seems more like they didn't feel they had a choice.

True, but the ones who wanted to join were the ones who didn't get invited. Ron was put out that he hadn't been invited, and then there was the whole Draco gate-crashing thing...although Ron was more put out because of the whole Hermione/Cormac thing, and Draco was more likely sneaking back from the Room of Requirement than trying to get into the party

Well, poo. I'm sure that somewhere in Hogwarts, some people desperately wanted to be invited to the Slug Club and weren't, therefore making my exclusive club statement relative. So there. :P

roflmao. You crack me up.

Percy. Percy Weasley would've desperately wanted to be part of the Slug Club, I do believe.

Exactly! Percy would have killed for a Slug Club invitation! And I think that if Percy had still been at Hogwarts, he would have been invited. He was Head Boy after all, in case you didn't know. ;)

With his Ministry aspirations (at the time), he definitely would've been prime SC material.

So I guess we're back to needing someone who would want in and wouldn't be invited. *sigh* And here I thought I was helping you out. ;D

Well, seeing as how the Percy theory can never be tested, it stands. :)

But there was Luna, who wasn't invited but was thrilled when Harry asked her to the party. Of course, that could be because Harry asked her, but I'm going with the Slug Club angle.

I see Luna as being thrilled with whatever's in front of her, but not really wanting anything beforehand. Just part of her offbeat oddity. I can't really see her pining to be a part of anything. She's comfortable with herself, and shows no insecurity to be accepted by anyone, really.

And I must say, I'm amazed we can still remember how this tangent started and relate it back to the issue at this point.

Luna is my homegirl. I was so disappointed when she and Harry didn't end up together. She's the only female I can see Harry being with. I can't really see her pining to be a part of some organized club, but I could see her pining for her friendships with Harry and the gang. The ceiling in her bedroom in DH says how much those friendships mean to her because she hadn't ever had them before.

That scene is so sad! It breaks my heart, because they're obviously so much more important to her than they are to them. :'[

So in that way, I can see her wanting to come to SC, just because it's someplace they go that she can't come along. *points to paragraph - Look, on topic!*

I agree with you on Luna/Harry being the best het pairing for Harry. Similarly, the only way I could ever see Ginny in a positive light would've been with Neville. Because she saw him long before everyone else did, when he was just a doofus to everyone else. I still don't like her, but that would've made me accept her as a legitimate character at least.

Kimberly//Ravenclaw
is pleased with your non-stalkerish adoration, and adores you in the same manner

Luna was the only girl who saw Harry for himself, and accepted him completely. Luna was the one that Harry talked to and confided in, even when he wouldn't speak to anyone else. She was clearly the most perfect girl for him.

I like Ginny and Neville together too. I just really think that the last year at Hogwarts, trying to keep spirits up and survive with the Carrows would have bonded Ginny and Neville in a way that JKR didn't show. You don't go through those experiences together and not become close.

That being said, I don't think Neville would care anything about joining the Slug Club. Back to topic! :)

Well, Draco wanted to be in it, and was rather put out that he wasn't invited.

It's rather like forbidden fruit or something, isn't it. People who don't have it want it; people who have it don't want it. (Example: the Slug Club party that Harry invited Luna to.) I don't recall anyone actually enjoying modern-day Slug Club meetings.

Well, Cormac McLaggen and Slughorn seemed to enjoy them, but they don't really count. I firmly believe that if Slughorn had added a disco ball and some club music to his parties, people would have totally wanted to come.

Samantha-Hope//Slytherin

[identity profile] accountingwitch.livejournal.com 2009-04-06 03:56 am (UTC)(link)
What if the music went "bow chicka wow wow"?

...oh god that could make disturbing fanfiction.

If by "disturbing," you mean "hot," then oh yeah! Why else would I co-mod a comm called [livejournal.com profile] hd_atdaclub?

Slug Club meetings double as mass orgies with Slughorn presiding?

Elaine//Ravenclaw

[identity profile] et-tu-lj.livejournal.com 2009-04-06 04:39 am (UTC)(link)
*ogles link*

This "debate" is getting more entertaining by the minute.

Too bad Draco wasn't invited (cuz big daddy Lucius frightened Sluggy).

Kimberly//Ravenclaw

[identity profile] the-gubette.livejournal.com 2009-04-06 04:49 am (UTC)(link)
Oh yeah, if I'd been Slughorn, I'd have totally invited Draco. He could dance at my party any day.

Samantha-Hope//Slytherin

[identity profile] et-tu-lj.livejournal.com 2009-04-06 04:57 am (UTC)(link)
Somehow, I thought you might say that. *perceptive claw iz perceptive*

Disco!Draco would certainly make Slug Club meetings a bit more interesting. And certainly make Harry more likely to attend. But even with Hogwarts' incredibly permissive socialization rules, that might be a bit much.

Kimberly//Ravenclaw

[identity profile] the-gubette.livejournal.com 2009-04-06 04:59 am (UTC)(link)
So what about leather-trousers!Draco??

Samantha-Hope//Slytherin

[identity profile] et-tu-lj.livejournal.com 2009-04-06 05:03 am (UTC)(link)
That would most definitely be out of uniform. =P But that seemed to be okay too, at least from what the movies showed. So I suppose as long as they stay on... sure.

Kimberly/Ravenclaw

So I suppose as long as they stay on... sure.

But then how could we see the dragon tattoo on his arse??? You're such a party pooper!

Samantha-Hope//Slytherin
actually thinks you'd be quite fun at a party

[identity profile] et-tu-lj.livejournal.com 2009-04-06 05:32 am (UTC)(link)
Remember, this is school. We must keep things appropriate for the youth. *wags finger in admonishment*

Wait, did you say dragon tattoo?

Kimberly//Ravenclaw
normally, no. but if you're going to have a disco ball...

[identity profile] the-gubette.livejournal.com 2009-04-06 05:41 am (UTC)(link)
Yes dragon tattoo! It was part of his rebellion against his father and his rules. Draco is a bad, bad boy. Someone should spank him.

Samantha-Hope//Slytherin
everybody's fun if there's a disco ball involved

[identity profile] malfoymercy.livejournal.com 2009-04-11 05:46 am (UTC)(link)
Well of course, be selective. Whats the point behind the idea of a 'club' if it's not just a little bit selective. I definitely think that because it is selective, it is more ..revered and especially draws more attention that way. Just not everyone is worthy of it.
