Wizarding Wear: Term XXVI, Activity 1: Fashion Trends

Activity: Fashion Trends - a discussion
Points: initial comment: 10 points, 2pts per additional comment
Deadline: May 15th, 21:00 UTC
Details: Every summer we have new fashion trends but do you like them? What would you change?
And do you think the Harry Potter characters would wear them?

So let's have a little debate. It's about fashion and I know that I love to talk about what models have been wearing on the runway (and well, when watching Germany's next topmodel I also laugh about the "models")
Anyways, like every summer there are some must-wears - at least that's what Fashion magazines tell us. But what do you think about these must-wears? Do you like them? Hate them? And would Hermione, Ron, Draco or Snape wear them? I googled some of the trends and posted the pictures so you have an idea what to talk about.

Well, basically I'm a fan of 2/3 of each trend listed above, per gender. I will never say no to vintage clothing as long as it's done well. I like genuine vintage items (that's why I love thrift stores and garage sales so much!) and I think that as long as the clothes are true to era and not made into some modernized version that shows far more skin, I can get behind those trends. But I'm somewhat wary about the 90's nostalgia. I get that ours is a very nostalgic generation, but I mean... that era had some of the worst clothes I've ever seen. I think instead of a head-to-toe look with 90's era styles, it'd be more fun to throw in a nostalgia piece with modern day clothing to kind of... make a unique twist. Zuba pants with those really awesome modern sweatshirts with huge sleeves and a cropped top. Prints are fun as long as they're not overwhelming, so I think there's a chance each style could be done right. I can never stress enough how much I dislike the cropped pant look (skinny or wide leg, male or female pants). I hope nobody ever wears them ever, even though I see them all the time.

I could see Ron wearing them, but on accident. He'd probably buy a regular pair of pants but because he's tall, he'd end up with the cropped pant style on accident. I know I've done that on more than one occasion (since I'm a 6' tall female and finding pants my length is a nightmare!). I could see Hermione wearing a fun print or graphic, and I think Harry could be spotted in a belted coat as he avoids paparazzi after the battle.

Yes, that's extremely relevant. 90s did see some very awful clothes... Keeping it to a well-chosen touch now and then might be wise!

I agree with this very much!!

Same here! And I'm completely with you on throwing in a piece of the 90's rather than trying to make an entire outfit from it. Because the 90's fashion was pretty overwhelming at times. Like acid wash jeans with something more modern would be fine; it's when you've got the acid wash jeans with the hoodie with the military boots with the bucket hat and so on and so forth.

I agree with your comment immensely. See, I don't have problems with cropped pants because if I buy cropped pants for adults for myself, they're pants for me, since I'm so short, so I actually wear them often, aha.

But omgosh, yes to Ron wearing them accidentally.

Jamie, do you actually get the cropped pants to fit right? I'm petite, and so often try on cropped pants, but they always fit poorly around the knee or hip---like, the lengths there just aren't right.

I think there's a chance each style could be done right.

I agree with that. I think that with most style there is a way to do it correctly. That being said, there's also such a thing as personal taste. For example, the Nostalgia 90s style isn't for me but that's doesn't mean that I don't think it can't be done well.

FUCKING YES. I am all about 90s nostalgia. But not for the clothes. The toys, the late 90s/early 2000s pop (WHICH WAS FLAW FREE AND COME AT ME IF ANYONE DISAGREES) but never the clothes.

You and I have the same idea re: Ron getting into any of these fashion trends: he'd pretty likely do it by accident. And I totally agree with you that the cropped pants look just doesn't really work for me. I feel like it's trying to be two things at once and failing at both?
