Wizarding Wear: Term XXVI, Activity 1: Fashion Trends

Activity: Fashion Trends - a discussion
Points: initial comment: 10 points, 2pts per additional comment
Deadline: May 15th, 21:00 UTC
Details: Every summer we have new fashion trends but do you like them? What would you change?
And do you think the Harry Potter characters would wear them?

So let's have a little debate. It's about fashion and I know that I love to talk about what models have been wearing on the runway (and well, when watching Germany's next topmodel I also laugh about the "models")
Anyways, like every summer there are some must-wears - at least that's what Fashion magazines tell us. But what do you think about these must-wears? Do you like them? Hate them? And would Hermione, Ron, Draco or Snape wear them? I googled some of the trends and posted the pictures so you have an idea what to talk about.

My personal take on fashion is that I really don't want to try and copy what everyone else wears: after all, I look much better as ME than as a poor imitation of someone else. That said, where I live right now fashion is a bit different than a lot of other places in that clothing is generally a lot more casual (and working with mathematicians at a university only makes it more so). For example, my suits generally collect dust except for specific Harvard Club events because... well... who really wears a suit on the west coast besides bankers?

Looking at the listed fashions, I had to check 'belted coats' to make sure that was actually a male fashion: the model looked more than androgynous enough to be female and the fashion looked like a specific female model shoot (like this (http://www.trendhunter.com/trends/a.f.-vandevorst-fw-2012) but with slightly more skin showing). Also, there are only two I could imagine fitting in with the Harry Potter characters: Draco Malfoy in grey on grey (he wouldn't be caught dead in a silly Muggle hat or those trousers) and Hermione Granger in the 60s motif. The 90s nostalgia shirt could - I suppose - be seen on the type of Sirius Black persona (from fic) that loves to make Sirius/serious jokes... but really that's more for those who REALLY want to thumb their noses as the wizarding world!

This just pinged something in my mind. I could actually see Lupin (young Lupin maybe but let's pretend he's around now so it wouldn't be 90s premonition fashion or something? IDK) accidentally dressing to the 90s style. Not the one pictured of course, but like... I'm picturing specifically the jeans/tshirt/cardigan/sneakers look that Kurt Cobain wore a lot (especially in the Live at MTV performance). But not as purposely messy.

As for the belted coat look, I'm not a big fan of the tie up belt on men, but this look (http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_R-5kp8rvgMA/Sp1Uumc_npI/AAAAAAAAIWg/nC4F5WLDE4M/s400/Peter+Werth+Tweed+Belted+Jacket.jpg) is fab.

The Marauders would be into the 90s grunge look, I can see that, yeah. The belted coat look you posted is SO uppercrust pureblood, though, that I immediately thought of Blaise Zabini (doesn't hurt that the model kind of looks like him too XD). I can see Draco Malfoy going for the grey on grey but he'd likely do them in gradations instead of one tone only?

Austin, too. One, it's insanely hot half the year so those men's fashions up there are not going to fly at all, but second, people are a lot more casual. For women, people wear cute dresses and skirts, so some of those trends could work, but the male ones not so much.

Also, I totally agree with Draco for the grey on grey. I can definitely picture that!!
