When he was asleep and dreaming, you felt the most connected. That should have been your first clue but you never were good at admitting things to yourself. Instead, you watched his eyes move behind their lids and thought maybe he was dreaming of you. If you bothered to study much more on potionry, you'd problem know that his dreams weren't making any sense. Instead they were a jumbled mess of things before the potions interspersed with moments when he was in control of himself. He felt like he was trapped in a box that he couldn't see the walls of. You thought he was in love.

And your thought was the only one that matter. At least while you had the potion. Once he asked you what you were doing and -- even though he knew you were a wizard -- you lied and said cooking him something for dessert. After brewing, you ended up making a cake because you felt so bad about it. Lying to him made you feel bad. That should have been your second clue.

When he was awake and you weren't prompting him, he was a zombie. He sat and stared at nothing for hours at a time until you took your spot next to him. It was like a reflex how he reached for your hand. It wasn't like the old days when he constantly yearned for you. It was almost as if he wasn't thinking about it at all. You began to wonder if you messed up the ingredients in your last batch. But his eyes were full of love and you settled into the space beneath his arm with a kiss on his shoulder.

The third clue you misunderstood and that's when everything went wrong. You watched his eyelids flutter in the dead of night and your chest felt empty and sad. You were overcome with how much you loved him and you knew he loved you too. You kissed him awake. He reached his hand into your hair. You stroked his face and whispered a million apologies and with the most serene smile he said, "But I love you. You couldn't never do anything wrong."

You stopped giving him his potion, finally proving Daddy right after all these years -- you really aren't very smart.
