I agree that things would be easier and he wouldn't go on to commit mass murder, etc, but no doubt his grandfather and uncle would see him and his mother as dead to the world. What with Merope having 'infected' the Gaunt family tree with muggle blood according to their view, I wonder if it would swing things the other way. Would Tom grow up determined to show he can be just as much the wizard as a pureblood can? I almost see him as becoming quietly obsessed with proving how adept at magic he is in the long run.
