That's an interesting thing to change. I think if he had needed one more object for a horcrux, because he couldn't get the diadem, he would have gone for something else important to Hogwarts. Perhaps even something he would steal from Hogwarts, and then after making it a horcrux, return it to its rightful place so it would be taunting Dumbledore by being under his nose the whole time in the halls of Hogwarts.
