I agree with a lot of this, which is why I think ultimately JKR decided not to kill Arthur -- it just would have been too hard. The only positive familial figures in Harry's life would suddenly be really depressed and perhaps Molly wouldn't even be as motherly to Harry due to her depression and that would be extremely hard for him. And knowing Ron's character, he would probably blame Harry a lot and it would strain their friendship.
