I think that Hermione Granger definitely deserved to be in the Slug Club. Throughout her six years at Hogwarts, she was called the 'brightest witch in the year' or 'of the age' several times, by students and adults alike. She achieved more OWLs than anyone else in her year, and she always had the best marks. Anyone who gets 112% on their Charms exam is pretty awesome, in my mind. She's also very crafty and clever, which makes her very valuable to Sluggy, as he always enjoys people who will likely go on to great things; she created the DA's galleons, and managed to curse the DA's paper so that Marietta Edgecombe got 'SNEAK' on her face. She's also one of the most logical characters in the books; she got through Snape's potion task on the way to the Sorcerer's Stone, and she was only 12 at the time! All in all, Sluggy was very right in selecting Hermione to be in the Slug Club.

Hermione is brilliant. How Slughorn wouldn't see that is beyond me. She might not have had family connections, but with a mind like that - who needs them??

I was a bit confused why he didn't pick Hermione. She might not have had a wizarding family, but neither did Lily Potter. Maybe he saw the potential for Lily's fame, but not for Hermione to have fame?

I agree. However, I don't see how he couldn't have known Hermione would have grown up and done SOMETHING to make a change. It is Hermione we're talking about here. Maybe House-Elf rights :)

Oh heck yes. She was bright. She knew all the right people. She got in with the Ministry and fought for what she believed in.

And she's Harry Potter's friend to the boot! That may not be the strongest point since we know Ron wasn't deemed important enought to get in, but she's... not Ron, isn't she?

And Slughorn doesn't really discriminate against Muggleborns, it seems. He's just looking for people with potential, never mind their blood status. Case in point: Lily Evans.

I agree completely. Hermione really stands out as not only being inherently brilliant but also quick-witted and passionate. It would be impossible for her to be passed up by Slughorn. I also think her unique upbringing and connection the the Muggle world would have been of some interest to Slughorn - especially considering how talented she was as a witch.

Slughorn was right to choose Hermione for the Slug Club, even if he did so a bit late. Hermione's accomplishments, her tricky charms and tedious potions and her perfectionism as well as her cleverness and loyalty would take her far in any prestigious job.
