MUSIC CLUB!

Welcome to the Music Club! My name is Brooke and I'm your new leader. This club is for anyone and everyone who likes music.

Before we begin, I'd like everyone to fill out an application. (Even if you were a member before, please fill out another one.) This will help me get to know you guys and decide which direction to take the Music Club in. Oh, and everyone who applies is automatically accepted. ^_^

And so you all can know my musical tastes and background better...

Name: Brooke
House: Gryffindor
Age: 21

Name Your favorite bands/artists (as many as you like): Regina Spektor, Placebo, Mindless Self Indulgence, Hanson, Ben Folds, Silverchair, Eric Clapton, Steely Dan, Ani Difranco, Indigo Girls, Maroon 5, The Dead Milkmen, Sublime, Crosby Stills and Nash, Jimmy Hendrix, Nirvana, Look What I Did, Submethod, Rage Against the Machine, Daddy Yankee, Rufus Wainwright, Muse, Pink Floyd, Alanis Morissette, Damien Rice, Harry Connick Jr., NIN, The Ramones, The Sex Pistols, Mars Volta, Garbage...and I'll just stop here because I could go on for a while.

What was the best concert you've ever attended? Well, I saw Eric Clapton twice in LA...that rocked. But a couple months ago I got to see Mindless Self Indulgence. The concert had a rockin mosh pit, crowd surfing, and pure chaos. It was one of the only concerts I've seen where the band's energy kept escalating, and the audience kept meeting it, becoming just as involved in the concert as the band themself.

Do you listen to the radio? Unfortunately, I work in a restaurant where the radio is constantly playing. So, yes. However, Nashville has recently gotten a new radio station called Jack FM that has made listening to the radio more tolerable. The station has a format that's more like Satellite Radio (no DJ's, very few commercials, massive eclectic playlists). I dislike Top 40 radio, mostly due to all the politics, payola, repetitiveness, and pure crap that's played.

Do you listen to alot of older music (70's, 80's, 90's), or mostly current music? I listen to all of it. I know alot about classic rock, and I think some of the best music came out of the 1970's. (Yes, I even own alot of old vinyl).

Do you want to work in the music business or in a music-related job? (singer, music journalist, manager, teacher, etc.) : I'm currently a Senior Music Business Major in college. Ideally, I'd like to be a Tour Manager for a large act, and eventually go into Artist Management. Both my parents work in the Music Business, so I kind of grew up around it.

What is the extent of your musical education? I play a bit of piano, but suck at most every other instrument. I was in showchoir for 8 years in highschool, and did all sorts of musicals and competitions. Now I've gotten out of the creative side of music and am studying the business side of the industry. In school I've studied History of Commercial Music, Music Journalism, and most any other subject you can think of.

Name Your favorite bands/artists (as many as you like): I am a huge Cowboy Mouth fan along with listening to Nickel Creek, Flogging Molly, Nina Simone, Billy Holliday, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, Aerosmith, Pink Floyd, etc. The list really is too long to even think about listing them all. I will listen to almost anything you ask me too. I love all genres of music.

What was the best concert you've ever attended? I would have to say that Sarah Mclachlan was one of the best concerts I have ever been to. She is phenomenal in the studio and on stage.

Do you listen to the radio? I listen to a variety of stations on the radio.

Do you listen to alot of older music (70's, 80's, 90's), or mostly current music? I love music from almost every decade of music out there.

Do you want to work in the music business or in a music-related job? (singer, music journalist, manager, teacher, etc.) : I eventually will probably teach piano lessons once I get myself a nice piano.

What is the extent of your musical education? I have been playing piano since I was about 5. Taking lessons from the age of 7 and on. I have played the French Horn (and have taken lessons) since I was about 9 or 10 until just a few years ago. I picked up the guitar (self-taught) last year and will pick up almost any instrument in order to learn how to play it.

Would you like the Music Club to focus more on commercial music, traditional music, or another type? (In other words, what kind of activities would you like to see?) I'd like to see a wide range of music from a local unsigned band to a signed artist. I'd like to see what all people listen to.

Name Your favorite bands/artists (as many as you like): R.E.M., Brand New, Dashboard Confessional, John Mayer, Kelly Clarkson, Black Eyed Peas, Spin Doctors, Jason Mraz, Death Cab For Cutie, Daphne Loves Derby, Belle & Sebastian, Toby Keith, Gretchen Wilson, Bright Eyes, the Beach Boys, the Beatles, almost every 80s band, No Doubt, Alanis Morrissette, Tori Amos, Fiona Apple, The Clash, the Sex Pistols, Outkast, Billy Joel, Josh Groban, Jet, Anna Nalick, Kleenex Girl Wonder, The Cribs, The Libertines, Louis XIV, Grandaddy, Meat Loaf, Pulp...pretty much anything, if you haven't caught that yet. :-)

What was the best concert you've ever attended? I've only been to a few concerts (it's not really my scene unless I really, really like the band), but I went to a Daphne Loves Derby show over the summer, and that was really awesome. They're great live.

Do you listen to the radio? If I know there's something that plays on the radio that I like and don't have on a CD, yes. Or if I'm in the mood for hip-hop. But I really don't like it. It all sounds the same.

Do you listen to alot of older music (70's, 80's, 90's), or mostly current music? I listen to every kind of music. Every kind. That includes 70s, 80s, 90s & current, as well as 50s and 60s. Oldies are awesome. :-)

Do you want to work in the music business or in a music-related job? (singer, music journalist, manager, teacher, etc.) : I used to want to be a singer, but not anymore. And I don't think I could work anywhere near the music business, because I'd really just rather be a supporter.

What is the extent of your musical education? Um, I used to take voice lessons, and piano lessons...that's about it.

Would you like the Music Club to focus more on commercial music, traditional music, or another type? (In other words, what kind of activities would you like to see?) I'd like to see a focus on both. It's nice to know what other composers are out there besides those who always do movie scores, and of course, everyone can relate to commercial music. It'd be fun to see something about the lyrics of songs too.

Name: Laura
House: Ravenclaw
Age: 23

Name Your favorite bands/artists (as many as you like): Keith Urban, Garth Brooks, Shannon Curfman, Sam Phillips, *Nsync, AC/DC, The Rolling Stones, Aerosmith, Chris LeDoux, broadway musicals, The Sims 2 music (yes it's a computer game and also a long story), movie soundtracks, David Bowie, No Doubt, Danny Elfman, Fighting Gravity, Randy Travis, Reba, Mozart, big band, um, it's really a lot easier to say that I'm very open to all kinds of music. I listen to everything. Really. And I'm always looking for more. My iTunes playlist is unreasonably large, but it's never large enough.

What was the best concert you've ever attended? I haven't been to very many, so that's a hard one to answer. I'm not really much for concerts, which is apparently very weird, but I don't enjoy them unless I'm a really big fan. I've seen *Nsync, Fighting Gravity, Randy Travis, possibly a few others that I can't think of and most recently Keith Urban. His show was amazing and it was worth all the trouble I went through with it. ♥

Do you listen to the radio? Yes, but usually only in the car because I'm too lazy to hook my iPod up for the short drives I make around town. I mostly listen to the country stations because there's just not much in the way of good stuff on the radio these days.

Do you listen to alot of older music (70's, 80's, 90's), or mostly current music? Yes. Tons. But my definition of "older" covers those three decades (I'm still having trouble calling the 90s oldies, though, I mean, I was there!) and then goes back a lot farther. A lot. For example: I've been known to listen to music that are reconstructions of medieval music, if that gives you an idea of how far back I like to go. Old music is the best.

Do you want to work in the music business or in a music-related job? (singer, music journalist, manager, teacher, etc.) : Definitely not. I love music and respect the industry, but it's entirely not my kind of thing. I'd rather just sit back and listen and enjoy.

What is the extent of your musical education? Well, I took piano for several years up through middle school, but haven't played my piano or keyboard seriously since about 8th grade. So... not much?

Would you like the Music Club to focus more on commercial music, traditional music, or another type? (In other words, what kind of activities would you like to see?) All kinds of music are a plus, no music type should be turned away! I'd especially like to share recommendations and such with other people as I'm always on the look out for new (to me, at least) music and bands! As for activities, I don't really know because I'm still pretty new to the clubs set-up in general. Perhaps some form of lyric-based contests? I don't know what kind, but it seems like something that could be used.

Name: Chelsea
House: Gryffindor
Age: 18

Name Your favorite bands/artists (as many as you like): I'll try to keep this list as short as possible. Billy Joel, James Taylor, Stevie Wonder, Coldplay, The Shins, The Dresden Dolls, Incubus, Franz Ferdinand, Ben Folds, Matt Hayes (Aqualung), Queen, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Minstrels of Mayhem, Norah Jones, Pat Benetar, The Remnants, and about a whole lot of others.

What was the best concert you've ever attended? I haven't been to many, because I don't like crowds and my ears are sensitive, but I'd have to say a Salvador concert. I know that seems odd, but I love latin music, and they got everyone dancing salsa and having a blast, it was just way too much energetic fun. My friends and I were sweating!

Do you listen to the radio? All the time. Usually online radio.

Do you listen to alot of older music (70's, 80's, 90's), or mostly current music? All kinds. From the old standards to the babies of today, I will listen to it. However, I do prefer some Porter over Incubus. :P

Do you want to work in the music business or in a music-related job? (singer, music journalist, manager, teacher, etc.) : I am a singer. It's how I make my bread. I live in Nashville, my father's a song writer, and I sing most of his demos. It's not that I really want to be a singer, it's just that I kind of have to.

What is the extent of your musical education? 5 years of piano, 3 years guitar, 8 years of professional voice lessons/choir, 5 full length stage musicals (Oliver!, Into the Woods, 42nd Street, Angry Housewives, and Magdalene). I've sung many demos and showcases, random shows and church services.

Would you like the Music Club to focus more on commercial music, traditional music, or another type? (In other words, what kind of activities would you like to see?) I don't know about activities, I'm not that creative with things like that, but I'd love to see maybe a discussion on the old standards/classics/musicals of the past century. It would be fun. :]

Do you listen to alot of older music (70's, 80's, 90's), or mostly current music? Mostly current...some older

Do you want to work in the music business or in a music-related job? (singer, music journalist, manager, teacher, etc.) : No
What is the extent of your musical education? School Chorus
Would you like the Music Club to focus more on commercial music, traditional music, or another type? (In other words, what kind of activities would you like to see?) I'd like to see a mix of everything...what better way to get people exposed to something they've never been exposed to before than to include a little of everything! As for activities...I like seeing what people come up with for mixes...so maybe some kind of mix contest...or creating and posting the soundtrack of your life. That kind of thing!

applying!

What was the best concert you've ever attended? Rilo Kiley. It was soooo hot in this little venue called the church.
Do you listen to the radio? Not much because my favorite station just got taken over by someone else.
Do you listen to alot of older music (70's, 80's, 90's), or mostly current music? I like older music. But, I like newer music too.

Do you want to work in the music business or in a music-related job? (singer, music journalist, manager, teacher, etc.) : Nah...
What is the extent of your musical education? I've had music all my 12 years of school. And I took piano lessons for some. And played viola for the last 7 years of school (middle school and high school) And now I added guitar to the list.
Would you like the Music Club to focus more on commercial music, traditional music, or another type? (In other words, what kind of activities would you like to see?) I'll try to be political and say a mix of both! Recommendations, quizzes..triva! whatever

Name: Stef

Age: 19

Name Your favorite bands/artists (as many as you like):
Mary Chapin Carpenter, The Shins, The Aquabats, Explosions in the Sky, George Strait, Elliott Smith, Toby Keith, The Darkness, Ladytron, Autumn Lights, Janis Joplin, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, The Killers, Modest Mouse, Dar Williams, Relient K, The Smiths, Wideawake, Five Iron Frenzy, Brooks & Dunn, The Mavericks, The Mars Volta, Death Cab for Cutie, Switchfoot, Johnny Cash, The Postal Service, Dolly Parton, The Beatles, The Cure, The Eagles, Alan Jackson, Relient K, Pink Floyd, Willie Nelson, Bloc Party, Dead Milkmen, Weird Al Yankovic, Cletus T. Judd

What was the best concert you've ever attended?
It's a toss-up between the O.C. Supertones and Audio Adrenaline, both at Creation 2003 (can't remember which year it was exactly?). You wouldn't expect a Christian rock mosh pit to be all that exciting, but the Audio A. pit had us packed in like sardines and the Supertones...they're always great.

Do you listen to the radio?
Not so much at school, but I listened to it a lot when we lived near Seattle (plenty of decent stations to flip through) and now here in east Texas (the country stations are wonderful here, and there's at least one or two decent classic rock stations, so yay for me!).

Do you listen to alot of older music (70's, 80's, 90's), or mostly current music?
I listen to a good mix of both, but I've had a Beatles kick lately, so I guess that puts me towards the older end of things.

Do you want to work in the music business or in a music-related job? (singer, music journalist, manager, teacher, etc.) :
Only if someone needs a lawyer and will pay me a hefty fee!

What is the extent of your musical education?
Choir, 5th grade and 7th-12th grade.

Would you like the Music Club to focus more on commercial music, traditional music, or another type? (In other words, what kind of activities would you like to see?)
I'd like it to focus more on traditional or lesser-known stuff (things not played so often on mainstream radio) because I'm always looking for new stuff to listen to! Also, ditto to a limit on graphic contests. I suck at graphics, especially since my computer is packed away 'til the fall. :'o(

Name: Laura
House: Ravenclaw
Age: 16

Name Your favorite bands/artists (as many as you like):

Garbage, Placebo, Mew, Nirvana, Hole, Bitch Alert, Kent (sings in Swedish), PMMP (in Finnish), Blondie, Evanescence, Lacuna Coil, The Gathering, Mazzy Star and The Spice Girls, of course! ;>

What was the best concert you've ever attended?

I haven't been to a lot of gigs, 'cause those damn bands hardly ever come to Finland! But.. Mew did perform here few months ago, and I have to say that that night was probably one of the best nights of my life. They played all of my favorite songs and the feeling was just so good, everybody knew the lyrics and the band was very good. So yes, that would be the one ♥

Do you listen to the radio?

Not very much, 'cause there isn't many good radio stations here. You know, plenty of those which play mainstream music, but very few of those which actually plays good music. But still, I preferably listen to my cds and songs from my computer.

Do you listen to alot of older music (70's, 80's, 90's), or mostly current music?

Not really, few bands from the 90s (Nirvana & Hole) and Blondie is, of course, a bit older, but that's about it.

Do you want to work in the music business or in a music-related job? (singer, music journalist, manager, teacher, etc.) :

Well, it would be great to be a rock star, definitely! But seriously, I don't know how to sing, or play anything, so I think that's just a dream. I'm not very interested in any other of those options, except for music journalist, which would be kinda cool. But since I've actually given up on my long term dream to be a journalist, I think in the end I wouldn't enjoy that profession either.

What is the extent of your musical education?

Two years of guitar playing (I'm SO BAD, seriously, I can't play at all) and when I was younger, I played piano for half a year.

Would you like the Music Club to focus more on commercial music, traditional music, or another type? (In other words, what kind of activities would you like to see?)

Everything's fine really! My music taste is pretty wide, so.. And I'm very unimaginative, so I can't think of any good activities. Sorry!
